I also keep a small first aid kit in my gig box - I think I got it at one of the local drug stores for something like $0.50 - real cheap.

To add to your list - I would keep a spare cable, even if it's a Hosa insert type cable in case something happens to your primary cord. Anyway, I lovr ypur music man! Its nice to hear something so refreshing. Anyway, could you elaborate on your method of composition and what you do or don't think about when you compose, who you listen to etc... I'm caught in an AABA rut and your music is a breath of fresh air! I also noticed you said you used a magicstomp, so do I! Do you make your own pathes? Would you be interested in trading some patches? Can you also elaborate on how you use the stomp, what side you use it on etc... I am quite honored to have played alongside such amazing Stickist. The people who showed up were all very interested and attentive.
The sound quality for most of the night was pretty darn good, and clear. I played through Emmett's bose system and it ruled. Normally my tone sounds way different live and this time it was pretty close to the sound use at home. I used a magicstomp and an addrenalinn for most effects and they worked out well. I didn't trainwreck any loops too bad so that was a relief. The funny part is I can't rememeber how or what I played! I really spaced out in (I hope) a good way. Like I was not even there during the performance. Maybe it was like a %5 out of body experience or something? I bet ya'll kinda know what I mean.
Anyway, the players each had an interesting approach to the Stick. It was a great reminder that creativity is truly unbound. I thank everybody who was involved, and appreciated this oppurtunity.

P.S- I was previously on Stickist as hypnologist. Now that email stopped working so I had to start over I guess.

Read the main topic related to this post
Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:12 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1046#p8107 Stick Night in L. I especially appreciate his words directed my way, gratifying to this musician's soul.

The same applies to Larry's review, which I'll respond to on this forum's "Chapman Stick" section.

When two such mild mannered individuals are inspired to such high words of praise, then it must have been an excellent show.

I had a great time, playing as well as listening to:

- Ben's uniquely original sense of harmonic adventure with flowing harp like arpeggios.
- Larry and violist Novi with a rock solid classical approach to composition and light hearted orchestration.
- Don and his drummer Neil Bettencourt drawing from rich rock and funk traditions.
- Kevin's vocal style, his Stick sound (mostly in the fingers), and some kind of an overall natural polish.
- Gary "the lion" and his drummer Jay Setar in a wild discipline - the tightest and most complex of grooves.

The "round robin" format seems great for a Stick Night" with just the right amount of appreciation and anticipation by audience and musicians alike. The stage monitors were turned off and we all brought our own stage gear and amplification. The room sound was full and resonant. My brother Dan and his son Dean videotaped. My daughter Diana introduced each act, setting the mood each time. Kyle the sound engineer was willing and capable to make it all work for live sound and video. The venue was local and Teresa want us back on a Friday night next time.

So what more could you want? Oh yeah, I want more!

Emmett

Read the main topic related to this post
Wed Nov 19, 2008 5:10 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1011#p8106 Rane SP 13 Stick Preamp for sale http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1050#p8103

by sturges (Posted Wed Nov 19, 2008 2:14 pm)

Hi all,

Making some changes to my studio, I've decided to part with my Rane SP 13 Stick Preamp.

Purchased new directly from Stick Enterprises, it's in great condition having never left my studio. I had met and grown very close to one of the many drummers I played with at the time. I had come from a very liberal east coast background and he from a Conservative Midwest. While we where from opposite parts of the country we had a love for music that was exactly the same. We often had many a long discussions on composers and musicians we liked. My drummer friend was a huge Zappa fan and did one of the nicest thing anybody ever did for me which was play me Apostrophe.Over-nite Sensation and this opened the flood gates to Frank Zappa. I got my hands on as much of his music as I could find. For the last three years he has dominated my listening but the first time that Zappa really made a light bulb go off in my head was when I really digested the "You Are What You Is" album, more specifically on the track, "Dumb All Over". I would say that that tune killed any lingering shreds of faith in religion and mankind. After this and reading his biography over 10 times, I have grown to love Frank Zappa both as a deliciously weird human being, composer and secular Humanist. He has change my whole point of view on music and will always be my favorite composer! What have you experienced?

Read the main topic related to this post
Sun Nov 16, 2008 7:51 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1040#p8060 pickup interchangeability advice please!!! Theory and practice are a necessity for growth, but we can still incorporate the "flow" playing into practice by taking a scale structure and instead of going do re mi up and down we can just improvise using all of the notes of a scale. So the scale is not just learned it starts to become a part of you- you put your own stamp on it. Same with chords- just jam out on whatever chord or rudiment you are least comfortable with until it get's into the "finger memory" a little better. Emmett hit on this in Free Hands. Maybe Charlie Parker summed it up with “You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail.” The bottom line is you get out of it what you want to get out of it.

Thank you very much for your comments and ideas.

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:23 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1035#p8044 need a stick - want to trade my vintage stuff http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1036#p8041

by Bulwinkl (Posted Thu Nov 13, 2008 6:17 pm)

I'd want to trade one or more of my vintage guitars for one ore more sticks )
I already have the Grid, which is a midi-specific stick with 10 0.13 strings and all the tunings inside a midi unit without which it just won't work (It has no acoustic pickup).
So, I'm looking for a more traditional instrument. Or even two. Better two. Stick, Grand stick, Sb8, maybe NS Stick as well. No Alto and no Sg12. The amount of strings is not really that important. Hard case and midi are desirable, but not that necessary. Wood preferred over graphite or polycarbonate. additional payment possible both ways.

Now to the most interesting stuff: What can I offer?
No reissues!!
they're all 100% playable and sound, but some of them are resprayed, some have unoriginal electronics and some have been repaired, which is common for instruments of that age. Of course if there's something like that it lowers the way I value it. So if you're interested in any of these instruments, make me know and I will provide the pics, price and the details, if there are any. They are for sale, but I'd REALLY prefer to trade.

here goes the brief list of the model and the year:

Gretsch Country Gentleman 1970
Gretsch Corvette 2-pickup version 1960
Dean Z 1981
Dean ML Baby Blueburst 1983
Gibson ES 125 TDC 1964
Gibson ES 335 1963
Gibson ES 150 1970
Gibson ES 355 1972
Gibson ES 175 1982
Gibson SG special late 1960s
Gibson SG Melody maker 12 str 1965
Gibson Les Paul 1971
Gibson Les Paul Junior 1959
Fender Telecaster Thinline 1973
Fender Telecaster 1969
Fender Stratocaster 1974 (very light)
Fender Electric 12 1965
Aria pro2 12 str 1965-1966

Best regards
Dima

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Nov 13, 2008 6:17 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1036#p8041 Five clips Michigan Firefly club http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1027#p8040

by MichNS (Posted Thu Nov 13, 2008 5:53 pm)

The last one, the Methany tune "Phase Dance" is now up with Steve Osburn on Djembe.

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Nov 13, 2008 5:53 pm http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1027#p8040 New CD Feature: Transcendence by Trevor Stewart http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1033#p8032

by greg (Posted Thu Nov 13, 2008 7:02 am)

Hi Everyone,

There's a new Featured CD up at stick.com. Trevor Stewart's latest disc, Transendence, is a great addition to the growing body of work by distinctive Stick soloists. And, along with Bob, Nick Beggs and Kevin Keith, it's also a really great example of the sound of the ACTV-2 in action. Really nice playing and arrangements/interpretations/compositions.

Congratulations on this disc, Trevor, and thanks for the great music!

Review here: http://www.stick.com/features/cd/

Read the main topic related to this post
Thu Nov 13, 2008 7:02 am http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1033#p8032 BB King and other funny stuff http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1005#p8029

by grozoeil (Posted Wed Nov 12, 2008 10:41 pm)

And a real, I think, extract from an Elvis Presley show. What a strong presence the SB8 had while allowing the other instruments adequate space. These guys are excellent at setting up rich textures with their instruments. Pretty interesting concept, though with the neck strap, he had a lot of straps going. Seemed really adjustable and comfortable though.

Read the main topic related to this post
Wed Nov 12, 2008 6:04 am http://www.stickist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=627#p8008
