I went through my 20s trying to be a multi-instrumentalist (keyboard, guitar, bass) after some formal training with flute and concert bands in my school days, but I felt I wasn't getting proficient at any of them. I did get my first Stick in 1995 but it became another "dabbling" instrument...

Before the year is over I thought I'd post the current state of this piece, as I've been working on it on and off the past couple years. I recorded a few takes on my new custom 5+7 Grand Stick with Stickup, here is a rough edit and mix. I like it better than my first version but it also helps to ide...

The possibility of processing strings separately or at least in smaller groups is definitely a cool idea - years ago I did consider getting two GK pickups installed on my Grand Stick just so I could do that on something like a Roland VG-99. Having the lowest 3 bass strings processed one way and the ...

Going forward, I think that for MIDI triggering, pickups like the GK series won't be needed anymore, as software for polyphonic pitch detection in complex audio signals will always improve (and already exists in the form of https://www.jamorigin.com ) - perhaps something like that will eventually ex...

I didn't think to take a picture when I opened up my Stickup, but there was a thread here with a look at the inside, you could compare your wiring to see if it's been modified - perhaps someone tried to make it mono?

Hi David, if it were me I'd start with the nut screws, on my instruments the strings are just a little bit above the first fret (perhaps the heaviest bass strings a little higher), set to minimum height that allows you to tap a decent sounding note at the first fret (if it's too low it will rest on ...

Hi David, I looked at the "now" pictures and like Greg said, the melody strings look quite heavy, like some kind of dual bass tuning. I would expect the melody strings on a 10 string to look more like this: http://stick.com/instruments/pickups/stickup/bamboo10.jpg http://stick.com/instrume...

Hi David, I think the first step would be to see how straight the neck is. If you hold down the first string at the first and last frets, are you seeing a gap between the string and middle frets, or is it resting on top of all fret surfaces? Even though this wouldn't all apply to your instrument, th...

Hi John, thanks for your questions! It seems that every tuning has its hidden strengths and special capabilities. Have you made any discoveries about the new tuning that you didn't anticipate? Since this new instrument is so similar conceptually to what I’ve been using for a while, I don’t think I’v...
