Post Anything you ever wanted to know about compressors.
I mentioned to the guitarist in my band that I was thinking about getting a compressor, and he sent me this link: http://www.ovnilab.com/

I really didn't know anything about compressors, and figured it was a fairly simple item, but there is a LOT more to it than that. The FAQ gets really in depth and has pages and pages of information. Thought I would share this resource with those interested.

Thanks for the link Nomad. Looks like there's some good info in there that'll take a while to go through.

Cheers
Eric

Ha! Based on my background as a cabinetmaker I thought this thread was about, um, compressors.

Lol! The first night I looked at that site, I was reading through it for 5 hours!

Nope! I'm the kind of person that really likes getting into all the details, for personal knowledge as well as making educated decisions. After all that reading, I found my guy: http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/mxrbass.shtml Most places sell it for $190, but you can get it for $140 on Amazon.

The MXR is good. I use it on the bass side. Although not as transparent as the Markbass Compressore, which you can't trust because its tube has a bad tendency to break, it does the job. I use it with a low ration, to even the bass sound. It is true that the input pot is too small and difficult to adjust (the input here defines the threshold when the compressor begins to work). You also want to turn the attack pot fully counterclockwise to avoid muffling the transients with too fast an attack.
