Re: New CD from Toy Quota - Stick'n'drums
The duo name "Toy Quota" seems ironic. There is no quota, only open ended versatility. Lots of Stick effects, but something pure about the performance ethic. Lean like early jazz with striking use of space. Brian's says "gig similar" (nice way of putting it). I'd like to play a gig like that.

I like the way you're able to get separate tones between the bass notes and the left hand chords on the 3 high strings. Is that done with midi and modeling or do you have 2 separate 3 string pickups on the bass side?

Toy Quota is tongue in cheek for all of us gear enthusiasts who never have enough of the latest and greatest - satisfying the urge to make yet ... the next quota. Thanks for your feedback (!) and yes we're very much looking forward to gigging...-bmcc

Is that done with midi and modeling or do you have 2 separate 3 string pickups on the bass side? Howdy - dual GK2's on the back side of the Grand - the melody GK feeding a split to two melody side Roland VG-99's and a Boss GP-10, and the bass GK feeding a Roland VB-99 and another GP-10. I'm not currently using the PASV-4 (not because I don't like it!). The VB-99 is split so I use channel A as 'lower bass' and channel B as 'upper bass' - typically both taking 3 strings each (but variable). The GP-10 has per string volume (like the VG/VB's) and it's sort of like an extra VB-99 channel via the swell pedal. I'll typically mix in a bass side effect with either the VB-99 B channel or GP-10, and lower or zero the low strings volumes, to keep the low bass clean. The VB-99's A channel is also directly feeding a GK fusion amp into a NEO 115 cab - it has really helped clarify the dry clean bass in performance. The cabinet was the only mic'd Stick output for the recording - the rest was direct stereo feeds from the Roland/Boss modules. For live playing, I keep all of the effected output (bass and melody) through a pair of EV cabs. Only way to keep up with my hard hitting drummer guy, Kevin. cheers, -bmcc
