Post Dead string
Hello everyone,

My 1st string has suddenly gone dead - no sustain, just a thunk of a sound. Could this be a truss rod adjustment? I had this at SE in December 2015 for a restoration and the strings were last changed in May - Classic Tuning Grand Medium Gauge. I don't play a lot so it's hard to believe the strings could be worn with as little time as I'm able to give the instrument. Any help is greatly appreciated.

does this happen in each fret ?

could be the truss needs a bit tweak, but i guess you should wait for Greg or any other experts to response..

Post Re: Dead string
The first couple of frets are a little off, and starting around the 8th fret it gets more dead as I go down the fretboard towards the pickup. I travel a lot during the summer for my work and have been in the east where the humidity has been much higher than normal. I'm in Virginia now and it is much cooler and drier than where I've been the last 6 or 8 weeks in the Northeast. Not sure if that's relevant. I loosened the truss rod a little, but there was almost no tension on it. It lost all tension with maybe three turns away from the instrument.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Most likely a truss adjustment is what you nees.

What kind of Stick is it and does it have a Divided truss rod?

Hey Boaz, I think it refers to the new truss rod, such as in the railboard. It's fixed in the middle so you can tighten or release both screws, One near the nut, the other near the pick up. It gives a much more refined control over the straightening of the fingerboard. In truth I should say that, although I've messed a bit with mine, it always goes back to the same position - it just doesn't need any adjustments! [emoji50] it's been perfect since it got here!

Grand Stick #1671, 34" Cocobollo, 12 string, no divided truss rod. I tried loosening the truss rod (pushing away) but after 3 or 4 turns the nut completely loosened so that I could spin it by hand.

All other 11strings are playable?
If its only one string then imho its not the truss rod.

Yes, just the first string. All others are fine.
