This is a very sad loss. I've been a huge fan of JA, and I have a good bunch of his cds at home. I'm especially a huge fan of the quartet he made with Erskine, Surman and Johnson (November), and the first cds he recorded for ECM (Timeless, Parable...). He was a genius of melody and improvisation. You can find a lot of tutorial video on YT. This one is so nice :

If I'm not mistaken, Abercrombie was Emmett's entree into the New York loft scene in the 1970s. He was good friends with John D'earth, and I had a couple of chances to hang out with him here over the years.

A huge influence on my music, especially the New Directions quartet with Lester Bowie, Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette, and also his duos with Ralph Towner...

Godspeed, John Abercrombie...

I had the chance to see him out at "My Place" in Santa Monica back in the day. He was gigging out with one of favorite (if not my favorite) bassist's, Mark Johnson and Peter Erskine (also a fav).

Great tone, no fear of exploration, got the guitar synth to sound decent, jazz seamlessly intertwined with other styles such that it just sounded like excellent music. Gateway was

A huge inspiration. He will be missed - and celebrated!
