Illusion or reality? Intimidating - maybe at first glance: unusual shape, lots of strings. But the tapping action used to play it is pretty familiar, and once studied the note layout is extremely logical and pattern-centric. (Not to say that proficiency doesn't take lots of dedication and practice.) Most intimidating? That's a high bar: more intimidating than this?

Illusion or reality? In my experience, yes I'd totally agree. To be honest tho it wasnt much harder to learn than other instruments, just comes from a different school of playing than the typical stringed instrument

Every instrument has its learning curve and different things make different instruments more difficult to learn. Horn players spend years honing their embouchure. Players in the violin family play a completely fretless instrument with no markings which basically means, if your ears/pitch isn't spot on, no amount of practice will make you listenable. Not to mention the bowing. Then there's this.
