Couple D.C. area gigs this weekend
Apart from the weekly Wednesday night open mics in Fredericksburg, VA (at the Loft) I've got a couple things happening in Washington DC this weekend, Sunday Feb 24: Glass3 art exhibit - The Shops at Georgetown, 2pm, half hour set or so. http://www.artomatic.org/College Perk - Instrumental Showcase by Cliff Art, College Park MD - 8:13pm http://www.cliffart.com/

I hope to bring my play up to the level that taking on opportunities like that would be a win-win. Right now I would gain valuable experience but it would be at my listener's expense.
Great job.

Their CD, "Elephants of the Monsoon Tomorrow" is a pretty interesting record.

Re: Couple D.C. area gigs this weekend
I had a very interesting Sunday of gigs, my half hour slot at the Glass3 art exhibit in Georgetown turned into 2 sets and maybe over an hour of playing since there were no other musicians scheduled that day, so they just said I could hang around and play whenever I wanted. Got nice reactions from people wandering by, the typical "what is that" sorts of questions, etc. The Stick seems to be well suited for modern, artsy environments like that. Later that night it was an honor to share the "stage" (i.e. corner of a grungy college coffeehouse, which happened to have great coffee and a great scotch selection - not even more standard bars have Lagavulin around here!) with Cliff Art: http://myspace.com/cliffartI was really impressed by their performance which is sort of a quirky instrumental duo, hints of Gentle Giant with surreal chord progressions and angular patterns weaving to and fro... their music especially works well live. Some of the most creative stuff I've heard in a while. I played a couple little solo sets between theirs, then an attempt at an "improv" session with everyone, after which I quickly bailed out and let them play some more on their own before the room really cleared out! Overall a fun time and glad to get those experiences under my belt. My playing is still hit or miss when in front of people but at least it seems the worst of the panic moments are behind me (i.e. not caring much if something starts to go down in flames, just trying to recover best as possible).

I don't think I'm going to upload these to YouTube for mass public consumption, but here are a few excerpts of my gig with Cliff Art last Sunday (my wife just used the video function on the digital camera - the audio quality is not very good). I'm just running into the Acoustic Image Coda behind me, and the output of that going to the little PA. http://wavearts.com/Rob/movies/RobCS.movhttp://wavearts.com/Rob/movies/RobWA.movhttp://wavearts.com/Rob/movies/RobOC.mov

Very cool, Rob. However, the 3rd link is dead. I really like the first two!

Re: Couple D.C. area gigs this weekend
This is really nice and inspiring. My musical goals are to be able to do what you are doing there. Just stand alone with a simple rig and play some music. Get some some nice applause and say thanks. I've never had that experience, my professional playing was always in bands in a supporting role. I don't know how long it's going to take me but I'm a year into the quest and I am going to make an attempt to try this in another year. Some days I don't think I'll make. But, I'm going to keep trying and seeing you do it makes me want to go practice and keep progressing.
Thanks,
-Eric
