Generally I'm not a fan of music awards but this comes in from the "well deserved" category.

In high school I spent a good chunk of my summers playing horn in a dixieland band at a local tourist attraction. One of the founders of that group was a trumpeter named Jon-Erik Kellso who was incredibly gifted even back then and went on to make a good living as an old-style jazz trumpeter in New York. One of his current bands is Vince Giordano's Nighthawks and in last night's Grammys, they won an award for their soundtrack music to the HBO TV series "Boardwalk Empire".

If any of you have watched the show, you know that the music of the era is an integral part of the landscape the Giordano's group executes it flawlessly.

Great news, well deserved! Checked out a few Youtube videos, found some of him soloing, nice work, very professional. What I remember most of John's playing from high school were those "Doc Severnson" style screeches he'd do, usually whenever we played "Chameleon". After he graduated, zero hour jazz band was never the same, even though I was having fun my first year of playing bass.
