DBRO GUEST LECTURER PENN STATE WORLD MUSIC CLASS
I am honored to be asked to return as a guest lecturer on the Stick for the World Music Class at Penn State Allegheny. Professor Doretta Whalen, director of music and film studies and also Professor of Voice at the University of Pittsburgh asked me. Doretta is an incredible performer in her own right, and at one time had a jazz radio show. The day: Tuesday September 29th Time: 6-7:15pm Where: http://www.ga.psu.edu/I usually do a current pop song for the college students and this year got my sights on "See You Again" by local fav Wiz Khalifa. Last time I played Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" opps I mean Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down"! Then I teach a little bit about scales, pentatonics and how chords are formed. This is a really great opportunity to introduce a new generation to Emmett's wonderful instrument. Getting it out there, Dave B "DBro"

Re: DBRO GUEST LECTURER PENN STATE WORLD MUSIC CLASS
Well, I'm off to see the class, the World Music class of Penn State ( sung to Off to see the Wizard) I explain a little history of the "Great Discovery Day", the wonderful tuning and all its advantages, do a little jazz, a little blues, a little Alan Parsons Project (!) explain major scales, the three "bins" of chords- Major, Minor and Dominant 7th chords -the Otis Redding chords because I'm a Love Man! oh yeah, and play an UDU drum! Tonights new pop song that they can relate to is Major Rap/Pop Icon Wiz Kahilfa, homeboy from the Burgh-represent!, "See you Again", No I won't tbe doing the Rap part, but the sung part instrumentally. Here's a real clear easy piano version that you can print for FREE. http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=MN0149458There is even a clicker quiz, so you better pay attention! I tell 'em whats on it. TIOTCQ- new text lingo* your humble Ambassador of the Stick, Dave B "DBro" *This Is On The Clicker Quiz

Re: DBRO GUEST LECTURER PENN STATE WORLD MUSIC CLASS
Andy, Gene and aNDROId!- thanks for the kind words!
It went great and they really loved me- they really loved me! Andy no problemo on the clicker quiz- I knew the questions in adavance and made sure I covered them-but I put a new TXT message on the board and would refer to it when i got to one of the questions.
TWBOTCQ or This Will Be On The Clicker Quiz!
I played snippets from El Condor Pesa, I wouldn't want to be like you ( Alan Parsons Project) , Sunshine of your Love, All Apologies (Nirvanna), Purple Haze properly starting in Eb and moving to E with the glorius Hendrix chord E7#9!, Mellow Yellow, basic blues, some New Age Textures and concluding with Wiz Kahilfa's "See You Again" which they all sang!
Taught the major scale, how the three major chords are formed, how modes work and played my UDU drum.
I then pass out tons of percussion instruments and they all join me in my original piece, on YT, the "Confusion Samba"!
One student said he had see the Stick before. He hailed from Long Island,NY and his chemistry teacher, Alex Rodriguez, played Stick at High School Assemblies. Howboutcha!
I want to thank Professor Whalen for having me back multiple times now and for the great class last night!
if these opportunities present themselves to play for a group ( I played for Rotary once ) just do it! ( Shia LeBeouf) Unless there are true Walking Dead in the audience, they aren'nt going to bite you! Any opportutnity to tell the world of Emmett's wonderful instrument is a good one!
take care, Dave B "DBro" Lessons by SKYPE and Google +
