Why is this chord so cool?
G7#9= G B D F A#
1 3 5 b7 #9
the A# is also Bb which is the minor third of the root G
So this G dominant chord has a natural third and a flattened third. Major vs minor
Two different chord qualities in one harmonic statement and a disonance within.
coolest chord.... outside of Maj7#11

A couple of things to note about this chord.

One reason why it sounds the way it does is that it contains two dissonant intervals, the Maj7 (between the M3 and the #9) and the b5 (between the M3 and the 7th)

This picture is from The Stick Book, page 4-5, which shows several different two-handed chords, including a C7#9:

and it shows the StaffTab for the chord (Classic tuning shown).

There's no 5th in the voicing, which is important to the sound, as Hendrix typically didn't use the 5th either.

Check out his voicing:

The dissonant intervals really get nasty with distortion, another key element of the Purple Haze sound.

7#9 chords were the first thing I looked for when I first picked up a Stick. That and a 7b5. Going to a high 4th on the bass side of a 12 string allows you to play a +9 chord with one hand btw.

Hendrix was a real master on guitar. When we talk about this particular chord...X7#9...it brings me to this fabulous world of Altered Chords. I give you some example of what I like to play on the Stick with a combination of 2 triads. LH in bass clef and RH on treble clef. Why altered? Because it's the type of chords where the 9th and the 5th can be (not allways) altered...to be # or b9th and to be # or b5th. Keeping the same basic C7 in the LH these are amazing...if you like jazz sonorities. All of these chords can be resolved with a Fmaj7 (9)(#11)(6)...I love harmony.

If you look carefully the 3rd example you'll see min and maj 3rd AND flat and sharp 9th. Quite a nice large chord.

BTW. ..the right hand three notes that make up the 7#9 if moved diagonally (one string and one fret up or down) results in a 13th chord of the same root. For real..amazing.

This and other amazing facts will be in my next Mel Bay book:

Cool Chord indeed- on guitar you get to double your E7#9 pleasure with two…. yes two open E''s the high and the low string while playing the E7#9 shape.

Lest not forget Kansas "Carry On My Wayward Son" middle instrumental which also uses the 7#9 and a 1/2 step chromatic slide down to the next 7#9. (you know the part "duh duh " whee whee [double bend e) bah dup da da dweee)- whoa- whee)

hope it helps,

I've always thought it was really cool when there was a perfect fourth on top of the Dom 7 #9 - the b7 below, and the #9 on top. (It's really an augmented third, but who cares?)
