That was super cool. I always wondered what a hurdy gurdy was now I know.

Michael,
great post- where did you find this! I guess fuzzed dulcimers and strumsticks are next! backed up by flanged Boomwhackers!

and then there's the most famous song to mention the Hurdy Gurdy- the "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan ( who played guitar under the piers in England with my SKYPE student and his brother growing up- how cool is that! )

Your artist your video seems to really be enjoying his Hurdy Gurdy playing! Rather Freudian title! :D
nice,

great post. Here's one I saw long ago with a hurdy gurdy intro to Gallows Pole. For some reason the screen is green instead of showing the picture. If you go down to the progress bar you can see some thumbnail pictues.

Does anyone know what the crank he is winding in captain strings video post does? I would love to try one of these things but the local music store doesn't have one on the shelf to try out.

MIke,
ask and ye shall receive!

how a hurdy gurdy works- the crank moves a wheel which energizes the strings!

What a badass Hurdy Gurdy player. Not something I've ever said.

Looks a bit like Ginger Baker w/o the red hair (on his head).

Sound/style reminds me a little of Jeff Beck. Where's his monkey?

DBro, you beat me to it posting Donovan. He has his own tremolo vocal chords, doesn't he?
I was a big Donovan fan back in my day. This song was not one of my favorites. I prefer "Season of the Witch" among many others.

Cool Mike. Mystical sound.

Last month I took my parents, both 73 years of age, to see The Tea Party ( Canadian rock band) in Hamilton, Ontario.
Jeff Martin, the guitarist/ frontman brought the hurdy gurdy out and did a tune with it mid show.......we were blown away. Sounded amazing in a big venue, nice and loud!

oh and, lets not forget the Butthole Surfers that did a cover of Donavans tune of the same name.....I think its better than the original......

Good find Michael!

cheers,
kev
