Post Re: Lovely tune from George Van Eps and Howard Alden
OK, now I gotta put myself down. Here's the real story.

Edward Van Halen would turn his back to the audience early on when he discovered his approach to two-handed string tapping (RH mainly parallel to the neck and strings). From what I read on the subject, he wasn't trying to be cool like Miles who also turned his back. EVH simply didn't want anybody to see or copy his technique. Later on, of course, his coolness was there for the world to see.

When I had earlier discovered a different tapping technique (both hands perpendicular to the neck and strings), I thot it was a world shaker and proceeded to show it, teach it and build a manufacturing business around it, complete with registered patents and trademarks, a CA Corporation and national distribution thru Gibson/Norlin.

Now looking back, I have to wonder who had the most "cool". EVH kept it in human proportions and concentrated on the music, hiding the technique. I tried to make a monument out of it, giving it away to the world while owning as much of it as I could.

So who's the coolest? Maybe it's GVEps who intelligently played his music on seven strings and kept quiet about it.

You have improved thousands of people's lives, enabling them to reinterpret themselves and the world around them through creativity: performers inspire through consumption, which has never been as powerful as creation.

If that does not sway you, then take a moment to remember how many times you have been asked for a new album. ;)

So who's the coolest?

Well....you are Emmett. You've gone and made the worlds most awesome stringed instrument ( this is the truth...period) shared the technique, and are one of the top players on the planet.
You've met all three criteria for a trifecta of coolness....

cheers,
kev

And I'll third that Rodrigo....
Ask any other stringed instrument player or even non-musician, and the answer is always the same..... "that is the coolest, most beautiful sounding instrument I've ever heard"....

Well.....I made that up somewhat....but thats the general sentiment regarding folks opinion on the Stick...

Emmett....you are THE coolest...

cheers,
Phan Boi

Many, many thanks for your sentiments, but now I'm embarrassed, having taken the spotlight away from my true mentor, George Van Eps, and somehow turned it into "How Cool am I". I shouldn't walk down this path and should instead let my music (which is sadly lacking at this point) speak for me. That's how GVE so modestly built his unique career and I'd like to follow his example.

Ms Givings

PS: Let's just say The Stick is cool and we all play it.
