Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
Yes Steve, I've enjoyed that video many times! This approach to on-the-spot music making, that also Keith Jarret has been known for, is one reason I picked up a Stick five years ago.
Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
Wow, that's a really tough call, just 3. But by doing this, it shows my age lol! I'm actually taking the 3 that got me started listening to music and wanting to play...something...anything.... and then it hit me.... RINGO!! I was 13 when they hit the US shores. There have been so many more influences along this path, from R&R to R&B, Soul, and more lately Americana (Wilco, Dave Alvin), and bands/musicians that existed in my era but I didn't know about them (Flying Burrito Brothers, etc). So being true to the "in my roots days" theme, I am staying with - 1. Beatles 2. Hendrix 3. The Doors - Note: I had to edit this one in, a tough call for position#3! ; Cream, CSNY, Canned Heat, Stones, James Brown, Sly, Janis, ..... damn, I'm gonna lose it! So many I've left behind!!! Gah!

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
Rand,
Can't go wrong with the Beatles or Hendrix. I saw Canned Heat before you edited--sorry about that! I've heard of Canned Heat but couldn't name a single song. I know they went to Woodstock. Let's see..
Woodstock 1969 Canned Heat Woodstock Boogie -Part 1
After 2 minutes for the brown acid to kick in, they really got a rocking! Good stuff! Thanks, Rand!
But I'm glad you changed it to The Doors, 'cause now I can post this:

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
I've never heard of Mike Oldfield. I listened to "Sailing," but thought this was much better. Do I even have the right guy? The two songs sounded very different. I liked Tubular Bells. Thanks!

I'll have to think about Genesis. I discovered them late in their career, with Invisible Touch, and then fell in love with Phil Collins (and now a bit out of love) and then went back to old Genesis with Peter Gabriel and the more progressive stuff they used to do. Big Genesis fan but I don't know that I've seen many videos of them.
But since this is Rootz, I'll have to go with Invisible Touch, where I first started. That was my 3rd cassette I ever bought (after Prince's Purple Rain!). The most amazing song from that amazing album and one I haven't heard in 20 years: Domino!
I just watched this and loved it. Here's Domino live: (Love Tony Banks' bank of keys!)

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
Steve - Canned Heat had 2 big hits but they were much more than that.... or at least I thought so when I was 18-19 lol! The one you posted from Woodstock is not good.. most of the performers there were more stoned than the crowd, and most of the performances reflect that! Here's a better song, the one that got me hooked ... I think you'll like it, going back to your "drone" song in another post ; "On the Road Again" :

The other one (heard now on a car commercial - that's when you know you're getting old, when these old R&R songs are used in commercials hahaha!) is "Going Up the Country" :

Enjoy!

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
Mind blown! On the Road Again is such an awesome song! I've heard this song a thousand times in my older brother's '67 Mustang, on a cassette tape stuck inside his player. He had like 10 K-Tel's Greatest Road Hits or something like that, and it was the only thing we could listen to until he totaled it and the cassette player finally spit it out! I had no idea who this was! What an amazing brain feeling, to finally make that connection. Good stuff!
Nice flute on that Going Up the Country--I think I have heard it on a commercial. Whatever happened to flutes in rock? More good stuff--much better than the Woodstock thing!
