Steve! I think you just took it up a notch. I've heard of the Dropkick Murphys but that was about it. That was the most awesome hooligan drinking song of all time! Talk about working up into a frenzy! I felt like pounding back a bottle and then knocking it over the head of the tosser next to me--bloody wanker! That was definitely the spirit of this thread!
Listening again, and resisting the urge to drink as a competitive sport (about a year now not drinking!)--Another Stickist Steve, Thick as Thieves

Re: Rock Anthems -- 3 Best
K Rex wrote: Where you been, buddy? Hey K Rex...I've been quiet for a bit. Bought a new house, moved in, and that pushed my Stick practicing and playing to the background. I've struggled to keep it going and Steve A's been heroic in working to keep me on track. I have been following Stickist via a feedreader, but just not commenting much. Thanks for asking!!

Funny enough, the melody from the Star Spangled Banner was taken from what you might call a drinking song: http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow ... story.html

Listening again, and resisting the urge to drink as a competitive sport (about a year now not drinking!)--Another Stickist Steve, Thick as Thieves I would have never heard of them if it were not for a Ferndale Michigan author who is also a mountain biker that wrote a book about the various origins of punk rock. The band became popular with their instrumental version of Heading up to Boston, which is the music in the latest Sam Adams TV commercials. I don't know the author personally, but he's made many posts about this band in the Basement forum of our MTB BB. For whatever reason, one of our dogs is terrified of thunderstorms and this band's music is the only music I've found that calms her down. So every time there's a bad storm I go to YouTube and crank up a few of their songs . Perhaps mellow music makes thunder and lightning sound more terrifying from the extreme contrast.

Re: Best Rock Anthems/Drinking Songs/Sing-alongs
Two songs everybody is singing here when they are played (strangely they are quite rare on local band setlists) : this version with Tony Levin on bass and Brian Blade on drums is different from the studio version, but still awesome) Speaking of drinking songs... this major hit single in France during the 90's (and in Europe I guess) Speaking of personal rock anthems, my favorite is this one : First ever heavy metal song I ever listened to, it was featured on the Heavy Metal movie released on early 80's. This song is just driving me mad every time it's played. Speaking of drinking songs, this one is fitting the bill If you like the blend between heavy/thrash/punk metal and folk music, I urge you to have a listen to this UK band, Skyclad. The first part of its career, when Martin Walkyier was the singer, is awesome (musically and especially lyrically)

greg wrote: When I was a lad it was 21st Century Schizoid Man....but I hung with a different crowd... So I went to look up the song because I'm not familiar with it. King Crimson! Of course--I recognize it now. I found it funny that Kanye has apparently sampled something from this song for his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy--which I'll be honest, not a Kanye fan and not familiar with most of his work. But I'm sure there's someone running around saying "Who is this King Crimson dude? He should be happy that Kanye is promoting him!" like they said about that obscure musician Paul McCartney, who was denied entrance to the Grammies afterhours party, because some rap dudes didn't know who he was. "But Paul should be thanking Kanye for the exposure!" (Tries not to laugh but fails). AnDroiD wrote: What about "Titties and Beer"? My worksafe Google filter says no such song title exists. My cell phone tells me that it's Zappa! I have heard this afterall! I was thinking Garth Brooks or Waylon Jennings, so I'm very glad to be pleasantly surprised. But the Google also says it's a Rodney Carrington song. I listened to Zappa's so far. Glenn, "the best game you can name is the good old hockey game!" Now that's a timeless classic! Thanks for the sports sing-along! Andy, I learned like 5 things from that article! There was a LOT of plagiarism--i.e, "sampling" going on with the patriotic songs. I'm not sure of the connection between patriotism and drinking but the songs about both sound much the same! I'm gonna leave Grozoeil's selections separate and get back to them after I watch the videos. Cheers!
