Post Favorite classical compositions and composers?
Glenn Poorman's sharing of the "Ravel" piano piece in another thread really blew me away. And made me realize how much more I have to learn about the huge classical catalog.

So please share, something you really love AND if you have a favorite recording of the piece.

I for one really like the new opera "Written on Skin" by George Benjamin. You gotta dig opera though.

So what can you share? And don't assume that we all know the standard repitoire we may not

Oh Brett, there's so many! Haha Maybe next time ask about favourite shred guitar pieces lol

For completeness sake, here all all three movements from the Ravel piece "Gaspard de la Nuit" played by the master Martha Argerich. The piece is based off three poems of the same name by Aloysius Bertrand. This has always been one of my favorite solo piano pieces.

Note how different the three movements are. The second "Le Gibet" has always been my favorite. Note the Bb octaves that ring through the entire piece like a bell as Ravel moves through various keys around it. The 3rd movement "Scarbo" is the one that is considered to be the most difficult of the three and one of the most difficult pieces in the standard repertoire.

Found this one Scott:

http://youtu.be/xjUh11EPGcM

These six quartets (counting the Große Fuge) are Beethoven's last major, completed compositions. Although dismissed by the musicians and audiences of Beethoven's time, they are widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time, and have inspired many composers and musicians. Igor Stravinsky described the Große Fuge as "an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever". Richard Wagner, when reflecting on Op. 131's first movement, said that it "reveals the most melancholy sentiment expressed in music"
