Although dismissed by the musicians and audiences of Beethoven's time, they are widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time, and have inspired many composers and musicians. Igor Stravinsky described the Große Fuge as "an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever". Richard Wagner, when reflecting on Op. 131's first movement, said that it "reveals the most melancholy sentiment expressed in music"

I'm not really into "classical classical" music (save for Bach - everyone loves Bach, I guess), but I do love some contemporary classical music: Stravinsky (all of, but especially the "Russian" early works), Musorgsky, certain Prokofiev's works, Britten (just watched his "Turn of the Screw" in the Mariinsky last night), some works by Berio (including, of course, the "Folk Songs"), probably some Ligeti.

I heard Debussy at a very young age and that informed my harmonic sensibility enormously La Mer is a masterpiece so for this poll it gets my vote .

I have a story to go along with this one so bear with me for a second. I was in the university music program back around 1982-1984 ish. It wouldn't be until 1986 that Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" was popularized by its inclusion in the movie "Platoon". I had a buddy who was a viola player and the university string ensemble took a crack at the piece. At first they were going to shelve it because even though it wasn't technically difficult, it was a very difficult piece for the ensemble to play together and convey the feel of the piece. They wanted to perform it badly though so they promised their conductor they'd put in the extra time to get it right. When performance night came, a bunch of us were in attendance and we'd never heard the piece before. It was unbelievable! They nailed the performance. The auditorium was completely silent for the duration of it. When the piece ended, there were a few seconds before the first sound of applause even started as a sizable auditorium full of people sat with their mouths open trying to compute what they'd just heard. That performance is still in my top 5 of those fleeting musical moments that you can never get back but you'll always remember.
