Post subject:  More Cowbell! -- Musical Comedy

I love comedy and music and especially when the two can intersect. This topic is: comedy about music and/or the making of music, or musical comedy. There's a HUGE list of places where comedy and music come together--there's entire genres of music and drama where these things are mixed, and there are performers and comedians who are funny musicians and musicians who are hilarious comedians. Show us some of your favorites! Embed or link to your videos of comedy about music and/or the making of music, or musical comedy.

As the title suggests, I'm starting with the famous "More Cowbell!" skit from Saturday Night Live, featuring Christopher Walken. Almost 16 years ago today!

Wikipedia:
Quote:
"More cowbell" is an American pop culture catchphrase originally derived from an April 8, 2000 Saturday Night Live comedy sketch which fictionalized the recording of the song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult. The sketch featured guest host Christopher Walken as music producer "The Bruce Dickinson" (as opposed to Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson) and regular cast member Will Ferrell, who wrote the sketch with playwright Donnell Campbell, as fictional cowbell player Gene Frenkle. The sketch also starred Chris Parnell as Eric Bloom, Jimmy Fallon as Albert Bouchard, Chris Kattan as Buck Dharma and Horatio Sanz as Joe Bouchard. The sketch is often considered one of the greatest SNL sketches ever made, and in many "best of" lists regarding SNL sketches, it is often placed in the top ten, being ranked #9 by Rolling Stone.

What's your funny video about music, or musical comedy? The only rule is please share and it must be funny! (And of course, let's skip anything "offensive" to, say, my 13-year old daughter, who wanted me to post this and might be reading!)

Marty, Kev's right: this is probably the most iconic moment in rock doc history! "Goes to 11" has been fully integrated into the language and culture, even by people who've never touched an amp in their life. This entire documentary is one of the most funniest things ever put to tape. I could quote it all day. :D

Here's some more funny bits:

Taking it up a notch: I've never heard of this guy but I enjoyed this immensely. Some good tapping guitar, too. Mike Rayburn - World's Funniest Guitar. 10 minutes of "Dad" humor and some awesome guitar. My favorite was the first minute and then near the end, Devil Went Down to Georgia at 7:30 or so. "Virtuoso guitar comedian." (That's an awesome job title!)

Totally Offensive and Totally Funny the Late Great Frank Zappa. (He even put out an album "Does Humor Belong in Music?). you want a list?

Punky's Whips (the movie version Baby Snakes)
The Illinois Ennema Bandit (no poo-poo jokes)
Brown Shoes Don't Make It
Mudshark
Holiday in Berlin (doesn't even need words)
America Drinks and Goes Home (covered by, among others, WOODY HERMAN'S THUNDERING HERD)
...I could go on and on...

Man, I looked through a bunch of Zappa interviews and couldn't find much in the way of videos at first. But then I stumbled on this: http://flavorwire.com/428034/frank-zapp ... iest-songs, which got me to Titties and Beer and Don't Eat Yellow Snow, which I remember from being a wee lad and thinking they were the hight of humor. Pretty mildly offensive, unless you ask Tipper Gore.

The first time I saw one of these Axis of Awesome 4 chords musical comedy videos, my mind was appropriately blown. I've enjoyed all of them.

Here's my favorite: I V vi IV. I'd just like to point out that before you put down the great pop works that have come from this chord progression, you must first make your own (turning it into a gold record is optional). I could jam on this chord progression and 4 chords all day (and do quite frequently!)

And so I don't doublepost, here's a song about prejudice: Prejudice by Tim Minchin

I won't ruin the surprise for you. So funny and powerful and musical!

Okay, next for musical comedy: New Zealand's Flight of the Conchords. They're worthy of a whole thread just by themselves. I've posted "Jenny" here in the forum several times, which is my favorite comedy song of theirs, but #2 and #3 are "The Humans Are Dead" and "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros," a Rap Battle.
Wikipedia:
Quote:
Flight of the Conchords is a New Zealand-based comedy band composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. The duo's comedy and music became the basis of a BBC radio series and then an American television series that aired for two seasons on HBO. They used to refer to themselves as "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo", but now speak of themselves as "the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand."[1]

They were named Best Alternative Comedy Act at the 2005 US Comedy Arts Festival and Best Newcomer at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and they received a nomination for the Perrier Comedy Award at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival Fringe for their show at Edinburgh venue The Caves. The duo's live performances have gained them a worldwide cult following.

Their first big hit, The Humans Are Dead.

My 2nd fav after "Jenny":
Flight of the Conchords - Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros, Rap Battle.
