R.I.P. Keith Emerson
Wow, I can't believe no one has started this thread yet...(at least, I couldn't find one) Keith Emerson, age 71, was found dead in his Santa Monica home by his girlfriend. According to reports, the cause of death was an apparently self-inflicted gunshot to the head. ELP was incredibly influential on me during my formative years, and Emerson was one of my heroes. I just can't believe this news. Whatever drove him to this course of action is no longer plaguing him, so I'm glad he's at peace. But this is devastating news.

Re: R.I.P. Keith Emerson
Keith Emerson is one of my keyboard heroes. Very influential to me at an early age (almost made my top three on the Rootz! thread). Thanks for the post, Luc--he'll be missed.

Re: R.I.P. Keith Emerson
This is more horrible than I feared. Quote: ELP star Keith Emerson 'shot himself because he could no longer perform perfectly for his fans' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -fans.htmlQuote: Rock star Keith Emerson killed himself because he feared he was no longer good enough as a musician, his girlfriend exclusively told The Mail on Sunday last night. The 71-year-old founder and keyboard player of Emerson, Lake and Palmer was 'tormented with worry' about upcoming concerts in Japan because nerve damage to a hand had affected his playing, said Mari Kawaguchi. She found Emerson's body when she returned to the apartment the couple shared in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, early on Friday morning. He had shot himself with a gun he kept for protection.
That's just horrible on so many levels. It's okay to retire! You owe nothing to the world but your own happiness! And you can't give anything to the fans if you're dead! Ah, so sad.

I was listening to Lucky Man the night before the news broke, thinking it would be a nice Stick tune. Woke the next morning and read the sad news...... Weird...
I really dug that band....RIP Keith..

Re: R.I.P. Keith Emerson
that sucks. i discovered The Nice after ELP and was always a fan of his. don't wanna do his inventory but HE COULDA TEACHED. my mentor/sponser is a pianist with Parkinson's and cancer and at 79 still teaches "his kids". it's what keeps him going. i guess Keith didn't wanna keep goin. again, that sucks. just reaffirms the fact i will not stop playing until they pry my Stick out of my cold dead hands. thank you for the music you gave me Keith

Re: R.I.P. Keith Emerson
After I read more details, I was a little torn on how I felt. Certainly it's sad and he was someone I admired quite a bit but the story sounded a little melodramatic. But I think my wife summed it up best. When I told her the official story, she replied that he certainly had some other demons kicking around upstairs besides nerve issues in his hands. That's kind of stating the obvious I suppose.
To me there are always ways to make music.
