I saw them in 1979 at Wolftrap pavilion (I was only 15, but already heavily into fusion and progressive rock). Truly formative for me, especially Zawinul and Shorter, as I was playing keys and sax...

I left my original post short to see where you cats were at. I Sing The Body Electric is one of my all-time favorite albums. Tale Spinnin'...my highschool sweetheart INSISTED on losing her virginity to it. Mysterious Traveler. Wow. Al Johnson - I was using a Morley Wah (still do). The second Stickist I ever heard. (E.C. being the first) Bought all Al's solo albums, and the Duke/Cobham band. Almustafa The Beloved. Haha. But seriously, Jo Zawinul never got the recognition he deserved. His synthesiser sounds alone can be studied forever. And his voicings. The Zawinul Chords. The jazz eleitists shunned/ignored Weather Report. I'm glad my ears were open.

Weather Report was groundbreaking and indeed shunned by the traditional, conservative jazz establishment. The alumni were all incredible players and composition met creativity at an ultra high level.
BTW. ..Mr. Zawinul owned the sixth Stick built by Emmett. He used to visit the Stick booth at the NAMM convention

Yeah, Steve, you know what I'm talkin' about. When Jo died, WBGO barely acknowledged it.

Yeah - now dare WR be financially successful? How dare they fill up large venues with young college students? "That's not jazz man!"

Same peeps who trashed the Mingus album, or Return to Forever.
