Post Weather Report...
...I'm talkin' pre-Jaco. As much as I love Jaco, the music of W.R. before him was my inspiration. Josef Zawinul's voicings, his use of synthesisers, his and Wayne Shorter's writing, Wayne's beautiful tone, the juxtaposition of composition and improvisation...and GROOVE. (Oh yeah, 125th Street Congress)

Oh man, now you are talking.... I too like some of the Jaco era stuff, Black Market is my favorite , Mr. Gone, 8:30.... But it is all of the Early Stuff w/ Alphonso Johnson that Speaks to me.... Yeah, JZ was brash and intense. I know both Richard Bona and Victor Baily... they both said, the key to playing with JZ was to make him feel that what you were playing was what he wanted to hear!!! lol. I think that the Stick is really able to voice those tunes in a very cool way. I have been working on the tune Black Market, and Alphonso Johnson's Bahama Mama.... totally do-able on the Stick. I would really like to get some of JZ's lead synth sounds. Electro-Harmonic Mirco Synth comes close.... Thanks for posting this!!!!

As above (and that's a great story re Zawinul!)

It was the Al Johnson playing that I wanted to cop on bass when I was younger. The smooth and groovy lines and foundation playing underneath others I found very appealing.

His playing with Flora Purim is great to.

The Jaco licks and tricks are always very cool but too highly specialised to be used in a general context. His stellar musicianship is obviously a different matter.

Cheers,

Tim

@ TIM - Oh yeah, OPEN YOUR EYES, YOU CAN FLY is an AMAZING album....It was fun learning that bass line... I played in several bands here in Seattle and we covered it, as well as Black Market, Gibraltar and Barbary Coast.... I agree, Alphonso's sound, his playing was real "rubbery funk"!!!! Do you know, Bahama Mama? There is a great YOUTUBE video of Alphonso playing that!!.

Yep, Open Your Eyes, her version of San Francisco River, all real nice.

I like the Clarke/Duke live album too (and it has really early Stick playing).

Today I will pull out Mysterious Traveller and Tale Spinnin' records, I think they deserve a few spins.

I wish there was the audience over here to listen to those sorts of covers, I think that if people heard the music they would appreciate it without having to be in the know. I will always remember seeing Zawinul in 2000. It was maybe a 300 seat club and the audience (nearly all men, probably mostly musicians) didn't move a muscle. We were dancing cos it was probably the highest quality dancing music you could ever hear! In the line to get, in passers by were dissing the crowd cos it was all males but if you had put anyone from the general population in that room, they would have had a ball.

Peace,

Tim
