By "tight ass player" I'm interpreting that mean that you encompass the musical project with your mind, and make your hands work according to your concept. Am I right? My BS is in percussion performance, so I'm familiar with the terrain.

I'm kind of tight-assed in the same way, the more time I spend in my dining/practice room, but fortunately my jam buddy Michael keeps assaulting the castle of my mind by throwing new songs, keys, and rhythms at me, and I keep surprising myself with new musical ideas, and new ways of tackling a groove. It's very inspiring, and an antidote to the despair of not having enough practice time. Plus, Michael keeps bringing in new people, and is also setting up a recording studio, so we're taming the wild beast of jamming into some sort of sensible arrangement that we can reliably play when we start the click track.

How do I do that? By getting back to my practice room and adapting the skills I learned in college, that formed the restrictive environment I tried to escape in the first place.

"We never stop exploring, and at the end of all our explorations
we come back to where we started, and we will know
that place for the first time".
T.S Eliot

OMG I'm getting stuffy and profound. Gotta go jam... Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
