Barney of course was a playing partner of Emmett and and endorser of his early endeavors to present his new instrument and techniques .
Sidebar...my first jazz guitar purchase in the early 70's was ai red sunburst Gibson Barney Kessell model. Hollow body with double cutaway.
Barney's guitar style was influenced mainly by Charlie Christian. Swung hard

The discontinued Great Guitars II on Concord is one of the finest recordings of this combination of guitarists (or any combination of guitarists for that matter).

Solo jazz guitar or a guitar focused trio is one of those musical expressions that contains many other styles compressed into it. It might seem odd but raga music has this same quality
especially with the sitar but also sarod...

I like to call it "jazz box guitar" and it is just the coolest grooviest thing once you get into it
and with the Stick if you can pull it off you have the whole thing going on. Steve can do it
with jaw dropping hand independence. Bret is outstanding too.

Thanks. I've had the honor of playing with many great jazz guitarists from Les Paul and Larry Coryell to Pat Metheny and Pat Martino. It's a great learning experience to share sonic ideas with 6 stringers.
I recommend a book called "The Great Jazz Guitarists" by Scott Yanow.
