As a singer and voice coach everything I do is viewed through the lens of supporting the vocal, so for me piano works best for that, and then it’s Stick (definitely prefer it to guitar). I’ve been spending most of my Stick practice time just trying to implement what I’m doing on piano and with my voice, but with the stick. It’s a lot of fun!

When I get really bored, I dig out my old Digitech Vocalist Live 5.
It was marketed by Digitech but made by IVL in Canada.

Here's a sample that I found on the web.

What a great thread. I enjoy hearing others perspective on this matter. I fought so hard to make the Stick a part of the Inclined, but it wasn't really welcome. Once I released myself of that environment, it was a much more positive experience - one that I have enjoyed most as a soloist.

It sounds silly, but the Stick is most compatible with my lifestyle. I still enjoy playing guitar, bass, mandolin and dabbling on keyboards, but when I am playing music on my own, it's always the Stick. It's simply an extension of me at this point in my life.

I don't think it sounds silly at all, Gene. It's the most sincere praise I could possibly receive for my instrument creation, many thanks.

I too, made The Stick my only instrument when I took three days off in 1969 to convert my 9-string, long-scale jazz guitar into a two-handed tapping instrument. I didn't have a name for it yet. That came a year later when I built a dedicated, bodiless "Electric Stick" out of an ebony board.

The playing method is what did it. I never looked back. I no longer had a guitar. It had become a new instrument and I became a new musician.

That's been my quote for a few years...

As a (former) bass player with children, I just wasn't going to leave home every night for rehearsals and such. Honing in on the solo Stick act has sort of fit my lifestyle for the time being. And, I think it's paid off.

If the Stick and Railboard came standard with MIDI interfaces, I could easily see it as being my only musical instrument.

I received my Roli Seaboard Rise 49 last night and it's a lot of fun. I've been using it with the Native Instruments Komplete software package and it's amazing. Simply amazing!

I want to create film scores for my Black Magic 4k cinema camera.
Here's another example from youtube of the Roli SeaBoard Rise 49.

Post Re: Making the Stick be your ONLY instrument
I decided to play only the Stick back in July and give it to the end of the year. I've cheated a couple of times by noodling on the living room piano with the kids, and a couple of rounds of Heart and Soul here and there. (What? You can hear someone playing the bass chords and NOT chime in on the melody? Like that scene in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, where the Toons can't not finish "Shave and a Haircut" with the "two bits" part? Yeah, that's me.)

I also got a LinnStrument, and have used that for a couple of tunes. But I've even mostly put that away to focus on the Stick.

I also chose to focus on the Railboard exclusively among the 3 Sticks I own now, because it is the only one of the three tuned in Matched Reciprocal, with the bass side as the "traditional" Stick inverse fifths, rather than mirrored 4ths or straight bass 4ths.

I have been playing the ever-loving shit out of that Railboard lately. Several hours a day. I've become obsessed with playing the blues on my Blue Railboard. You're not supposed to be able to easily play the blues on the inverse 5ths, they (and me) always said, and they're probably right, but I'm too stubborn and untalented to know any better. I've been literally waking up every morning lately humming the blues basslines and riffs I was working on the night before.

I've never been personally more happy with my musical progress than at any other time in the last 33 years I've been trying to learn an instrument. And with a statement like that, I must put up or shut up. Less talking and more rocking. In fact, I'm taking a couple of hours of leave from work today because I have a (swear-to-god) "bass emergency" that I told my boss. I must get these licks recorded! (And out to the world to ignore!)

Leaving now to record some bass licking. I lost the thread there a second--yeah, it's just Stick and nothing but Stick until Christmas at least. And I'll share my bass emergency jamming here in a bit. Having the time of my life here, though. Cheers!

--Stickist Steve #434 and moving on up!
