Indeed!!! Everyone LOVES Jaco, but for my money it was always Alphonso Johnson. His tone and rubbery funky baselines really propelled Weather Report.

OK this might cause trouble.
I was really in to Weather Report while I was at Berklee college of Music in '78/79. Although The Academia seemed to poo-poo Zawinul, Shorters recent excursions, (after Miles - remember the timeframe), and everything I was listening to, and transcribing. (Zappa, Don Ellis). So I left and ATE every thing I heard Alphonso Johnson was doing. And Jaco came along and AJ went off on his own and got a STICK (it might be the one Jo Zawinul bought) and I bought ALL Alphonsos albums HOPING he would give me the reason to buy a Chapman Stick. I still bought one (@ Sam Ash NYC) because of Tony Levin. Emmett and Tony inspired me to get a Stick. Alphonso Johnson's bass playing is brilliant. But I ain't getting the Stick stuff. Where is it?
BTW this is personal taste I don't want to play Bach on a Stick I want someone to make my mind bleed.

@AnDroiD!! YES!!! I totally get what you are saying about his Stick playing... I always wanted something "meatier" and progressive... on his recordings, the Stick is not discernible and when it is, its this "thin" almost "classical" or "pop" feel to it... Always left me very disappointed

All the time I was waiting for him to plug it into his bass rig...
Thank you Emmett and Tony for inspiring me to take the plunge.
Emmett, when he does "covers", even when it's a "classic", takes it out. A TRUE VISSIONARY. In his playing (searchng for a SOUND) and the VEHICLE.

Hey Marty, thanks for that! My first "outside" classical piece was "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" in the late '70s. Most recent is "Nessun Dorma". Some of my other favorites are "Clair de Lune", "Celesta Aida" and Schubert's "Ave Maria".

Yeah, I like to take them apart, honoring nothing but my own style I guess, then re-harmonize with jazz chords, unbalanced phrasing and polyrhythms. What I do honor from the composer is the song itself, which I love and which is a part of our culture and my life.
