Re: Hal Galper piano lesson
Nice lesson from Hal for building a musical vocabulary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4kVUIpfTPUand technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDw1igyu ... ure=relmfuThis is part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NehOx1Js ... ure=relmfuThis last post might be relevant as I hear a lot of stick players (on youtube) playing jazz using 'blanket' scale improvisations which I personally dont think sounds that great in a jazz context. Bearing in mind that scale base thinking wasn't really introduced into jazz until the late 50s ....and even then scales was an exotic addition rather than a replacement for chord tone improv. In a more modern rock/shred/modal context all bets are off- im just talking about improvising over standards in a jazz idiom. I think Frank Joliffe is/was? one of the few stickists Ive heard who really improvise over chord changes in a really strong way, randy strom is another. Any thoughts? .......

Re: Hal Galper piano lesson
He is 100% correct!!!!!!
Bebop and traditional chordal improv is rare on the stick. I'll post some after I finish my cd work (though I don't consider myself on the same level as the guys you've mentioned).
I haven't heard much from anyone. Even the guys you've mentioned are just scratching the surface of the methods potential.
I think it's a real missing piece in the stick world.
Those are great videos

He is 100% correct!!!!!! Brett may 50% wrong here I look foward to hearing some of your new stuff Brett .... stick has a heap of possibilitys I haven't heard much from anyone. Even the guys you've mentioned are just scratching the surface of the methods potential. Right its all pretty straight ahead stuff .... kinda 40s- 50s harmonic language..... Im not seeing a whole heap of more modern complex stuff like superimposition, back cycling, major 3rd stuff great lesson by Julian Lage my current favourite guitarist one on soloing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA4cbr69LwAand another on comping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11P-tWUZr5cHe can go from traditional to way out with ease...

Re: Hal Galper piano lesson
I got a black polycarb back in early 2000 ( i managed to find one 2nd hand in NZ) and soon after went on to study music composition and jazz guitar performance .... while I really liked the stick It ended up taking a back seat when I started playing more guitar gigs, transcribing fingerstyle players like charlie hunter or lenny breau. I ended up swapping it for a guitar ....ouch .... the high strings on the stickup are just a little too brittle for what i was hearing in my head ....which at the time was fingerstyle guitar.
I played solo and in combos ....In the last few years I have been focused on developing my linear improvisations and transcribing julian lage stuff etc as well as my compositions have lead me back to looking at getting another stick.
Still stickless currently however ..... Am on the look out though
Howabout you ?
