I've been playing stick for 10 years, upright bass before that. studying "jazz" for 30 years.

still tryin to learn how. ears are my big focus.

I hope you find a stick it would be nice to have someone with your knowledge and direction on the stick.

I think you have a refreshing approach.

hey cool Steve .... its nice to see you playing with that approach , Wes showed us the way to play . I would have probably mentioned you as well if I had seen that particular video. but I think all the other videos Ive seen of you ..you are soloing in a kind of 'Martinolike', linear motivic kind of style. I have a heap of Martino albums and I love his playing , but I wouldn't say he was a harmonic/melodic player( in that if I heard only his solo sans accompanyment that I could clearly hear a harmonic progression). Im pretty sure Pat can do it though if he wanted to ... but Im thinking more along what players like Pat Metheney and julian lage do

heres a video of Julian Lage playing solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHMOyKiuB08
his solo starts around 3:10
Hes pretty clearly outlining the form the whole time with mostly single notes. Hearing stuff like this made want to try to apply it to stick

Btw steve I'd love to see your approach to playing a ballad on the stick .... have you got any posted ?

I used to have the stick night 99 video and I remember enjoying your tone and time on that video.

Yes there are plenty of ballads. Best remembrance was actaually a slow version of Sleeepwalk with Les Paul. Just played Round Midnight with Pat Martino. There are many others. I played Letters from Home for Pat Metheny at a private get together many years ago.

Ill see if I can find some of the videos you mentioned Steve
After transcribing and listening to lots of Charlie Hunter Ive definitely developed an deep appreciation for more lyrical improv . Charlie said he wanted to be able todo the pat martino thing on his 8 string when he started but soon figured out that it was pretty much physically impossible.... he did get pretty quick that being said.

So in the spirit of sharing:
Heres some stuff for those at stickist.com that I did as part of a music research project in 2005 about charlie hunter....who I think several members seem to appreciate

http://home.planet.nl/~boons105/8string.html

Its okay as far as brief overview goes and someone might find it useful... there are some mostly accurate charts as well of some of his songs

OMG

Pat's lesson wonderful. Metheny means more to me than words can express.

I like it how Pat is pretty frank and friendly at the same time during the lesson.
I thought it was one of the best lessons Id heard

I've been very fortunate to have played with all of the aforementioned players. I recorded an early Stick tune I called "4 P.M." which means "for Pat Metheny (or Martino)" both huge influences on my playing style. Martino and Metheny both have their distinct voices and it was an honor to jam with them. And both have Wes in their blood, so it's wise to give credit to that source. Before the Stick, I also had some great encounters playing guitar duets with legends, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Raney, Joe Pass, Attilla Zoller, Jimmy Ponder and others. All these experiences bring me to my present musical status......still a student of the music.
Studying the unlimited possibilities of The Chapman Stick adds to the gratification of sonic exploratoration.

I haven't check out Pat's lesson's yet but Hal's brilliant. Holy cow. I mean the playing itself is way above my head but the stuff he says makes so much sense to me. This one on timing/minimizing emotion is so awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJRjEpjd9S4

I bet I could get Hal yelling at me with 10 minutes

these are great lessons, and you've got to give great credit to the students, grace under pressure.
