Re: Favorite guitar solos
Guitar being my first instrument, I have and continue to listen to a ton of great guitarist and solos. Never the less, my all time favorite solo is the explosion from 00:20 - 01:22 of Hendrix's "Power Of Soul", live version at the Filmore East with Band of Gypsy's.
Keep in mind this solo was played over 42 years ago, just 8 years shy of half a century on crap technology by todays standards. In its time this solo was beyond way ahead and was a complete reinvention of how guitar was played. This was the birth of electric guitar playing as its own unique style. Enjoy!

JAY-sus, that's badass. If you don't want to shake SOMETHING on your body while listening to that, check the obituaries for your picture. The inspiration to Billy Cobham's "Stratus", perhaps?

Re: Favorite guitar solos
even tho i am a bassist of 30 or so years i do have a few guitar solos that have really shaped my musical tastes over the years. Greg got me going when he mentioned steely dan solo's; ive been probably most intrigued by those kind of guitarists who were so free in their expression that they would leave me in breathless wonderment, who's names run the gamut from steve howe to walter becker to steve vai to guys like gary moore and alan holdsworth, the great bending tequniques of guys like jerry donahue , and jeff beck three of my favorite solo's ? i have a few more than that. do it again from steely dan ;amazing distorted sitar solo. big trouble ,steve vai's amazing solo off of the "david lee roth's eat em and smile" cd.alex lifeson's guitar solo at the end of different strings on the permanent waves album used to give me chills. and my all time favorite solo of all time , the very organic and expressive limelight guitar solo on rush's moving pictures album. alex's use of feedback is really wonderful in that song . Alan holdsworth is amazing on the whole level 42's guaranteed album of 1990 i believe i did wear out a few of those cd's.

Re: Favorite guitar solos
All of the above. special creds for people mentioning Hatfield. now of course, my first influences AND still my favs: Jimi, Frank, Kath, Gilmore. couple a things here: on Chicago Transit Authority, Terry starts a riff, turns up volume knob, and does a burning solo. then the band starts the beginning riff of the song, someone in the control room musta seen he was on fire, and said, "give 'im another one." and comes out with something completely different yet equally blistering...On Steven Stills first solo album, he has Jimi and Eric guest on back-to-back songs. Jimi's playing "session rhytmn" and then lets loose on a short octave solo. then they do a tune w Eric. to this day i don't know why Steve programmed them in that order. listen for yourself
peace and astute observation, -marty

Yep, Hatfield.
Gary Green's solo on Gentle Giant's "His Last Voyage".
Everything on Hendrix's "Nine to the Universe". Good luck getting that one, let me know if you do.
Franco Mussida's solo on PFM's "Four Holes in the Ground".
Frederick Thordendahl's "Special Defects".

Re: Favorite guitar solos
Funny, I don't think anybody besides me mentioned an actual guitar "SOLO."

Re: Favorite guitar solos
Android, I love that first Hackett album. "Voyage of the Acolyte". Great stuff.
It occurred to me that no one has yet mentioned Adrian Belew's solo in "Elephant Talk", although I'd bet everyone here can sing the entire thing in their heads...
