New Jazz
I used to listen to a lot more jazz than I do these days. For me, the genre is so contrived... even more so than rock or anything else. Got very over it a number of years ago.
However, I still listen in the car (where I spend most of my life, it seems) when it comes on the radio. I was parking the car in a garage in Williamsburg last Sunday, and heard a fantastic new artist. A great song, with an almost Mahavishnu-like approach, but with jazz sensibilities. I cannot tell you how well-crafted and beautiful this stuff is.
Romain Collin, the song (and the album) is called "The Calling". Highly recommended for anyone here.
Anyone else got some recommendations for good, interesting, ground-breaking, contemporary jazz?

Re: New Jazz
Very cool!!!!!!
Thanks for that (cd on its way). Have you heard Brad Mehldau?
My fav modern stuff is still Metheny his past 10 years has been his best. The best American artist ever?? I think so.
Dave Holland and Steve Coleman and the Mbase movement? I love this stuff. Of course I love classic jazz, so I can listen to the same old standards and be happy with a good solo.

Re: New Jazz
Cool, Brett!! Lemme know what you think.
Yeah, love Dave Holland. Steve Coleman is great, too. Haven't listened to Metheny in a while, he used to be a favorite. I saw his band (gottlieb? and mays) at the Chrysler Hall in Norfolk years ago. Great night.
I'll check out Mehldau, thanks for the tip.

Re: New Jazz
Wow, there's actually a jazz station still around somewhere? Wish it would reach up here...
I'm not particularly hip to the jazz scene, but I like Vijay Iyer, especially his trio work.

Re: New Jazz
Thanks to you as well, Brett, for the reminder about Steve Coleman. I've been meaning to check out his "Elements of One" DVD.

Re: New Jazz
If you've never checked out E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio) definitely worth the while in my opinion.

Re: New Jazz
K Rex..! Just listening to this now, fucking beautiful...! Love the arpeggios. All the ideas are so well connected aren't they... Luques Curtis was here recently with none other than Eddie Palmieri K Rex wrote: I used to listen to a lot more jazz than I do these days. For me, the genre is so contrived... even more so than rock or anything else. Got very over it a number of years ago. Right with you here. As a drummer this is a big reason why I don't have an established jazz career as such. Stick has allowed me to find my original voice. Have you seen Tigram Hamasyan? This is a fav track for me, thought you might like the rough edges. Stickist regards

Re: New Jazz
I saw this at The Melbourne Recital Centre earlier this year. They had a different drummer, still this is pretty lush.
