Just Saw Bob Culbertson at the Mountain View Art & Wine Fest
I was at the Art and Wine Festival in Mountain View, CA and saw Bob Culbertson playing. What an amazing player. A real inspiration watching him play. I have seen him at the festival for the last two years but this would be the first time I am seeing him as a fellow Stickist. Third time is a charm I guess... He had a capo on his bass strings so that he can do some open string playing. I was thinking about doing this with my NS so that I can do some open string stuff on the bass side of my NS like a drone note... gotta get a capo that works...

Hey Dean, Bob is very personable, and loves to talk about The Stick. If you didn't talk to him this time, then next time, say "Hey Bob, I got a Stick!". Better than asking him if it's a 'sitar' . BTW I have seen him play the NS , no fooling, and not too shabby either ... `J`

Re: Just Saw Bob Culbertson at the Mountain View Art & Wine
Hi JRJ!
I talked with him for a short bit. He asked about how the Free Hands Seminar went.
He really likes talking about the stick and educates the audience on what the instrument is and how it's played. I hope some of those people in the crowd will pick one up and become fellow stickists.
I would love to watch him play NS. I wish there is a video of it... I would love to sit down with him some time and get some pointers or take a lesson but he lives a couple hours north of SF. Maybe I can do a little road trip up his way and make it a weekend with the wife or something...

Sheesh, would someone get him some longer shorts, preferably below the knee, though he dose have nice knees.... I can't get my head around how much Bob seems to play, and how at his ripe age, he doesn't get too sore. I suppose the muscle memory would be pretty strong, to say the least. Lots of Love to ya Bob, your inspiration and music is immortal.

Playing stick wearing shorts should be prohibited anyway

There is a great picture in the Free Hands book of Alphonso Johnson with his shirt off and a Stick with a women's arms wrapped around him. I have heard some mention that the Stick is a musical extension of an instrument that rhymes with another part of the male anatomy.

you guys are all sick. Dean, get a couple of different capos and be prepared to modify in some way. it wont hold down the thicckest string and the others. hadta cut away some of the rubber. u can do only some of the higher strings too. right on top of the fret, not behind. my personal experience. i also lye the Stick down horizontal and roll pinballs up and down the strings...
peace and prepared Stickisms, -marty

I occasionally sleep with mine......
Btw I went back over Bob's getting a good sound video last night, just when I thought I'd thrashed all his videos enough.
Bob's creative contributions are vast and the detail with which he shares his stuff is, as we all know, is elegant and wildly substantial.

peace and prepared Stickisms, -marty I know I will have to try a few things for the Capo. The strings are so different in thickness on the NS (and on normie sticks). A capo with thick and soft pad will work best. The other issue I am going to have is the back side of the neck has the bevels and the capo might have a hard time clamping down. I'm just going to have to play around. Thanks AnDroiD!
