Re: Your favorite melodic bass lines?
Great topic, great links.
My favorite would be Teen Town live 1977. Very unique arrangement, and Jaco played drums on the original. Check out Zawinul doubling Jaco's melody.

Led Zeppelin's What is what should never be. But I'll go in a different direction and mention some songs most of you have never listened to: Ten Paz by Lucybell (a proggish band from Chile). Also: Viajar, Me dejo tentar, Fui a cazar. Hombre al Agua by Soda Stereo (greatest latin american pop rock band ever, from Argentina). What an awesome bass line. Also, La Cúpula. This one by Alonso Arreola (my bass teacher) "of how the brothers navigated through blood in reverse" or something like that https://soundcloud.com/alonso-arreola/d ... -navegaronArboles Frutales by Cafe Tacuba has some nice melodic parts on bass. Bicicleta and El puñal y el corazón have melodic bass lines as well.

That Weather reprt is my fav vid of that particular song.
I could say something obvious like Marvin Gayes "What's Going On' but y'all should know that by now.
Paul McCartney always did have such strong melody in his lines...
I've just about finished working this up and just had to use much of Chuck Rainey's bass lines, as you would well appreciate.

How about THIS It's relatively easy to play. The improv afterwards is classic Ron Carter and shows how musically you can develop just 4 chords.

Just to show I really do spend too much time on Youtube.
This immortal bass line from Marcus. Check out how much of a feature this line is an all his production all over it.

OK just checked YouTube. you guys gotta check out Chris Squire solo album "Fish out of Water"..."Silently Falling". proves he was one of the leading composers in the band. and his high vocals - always over Anderson. major influence. even tried Rotosounds once (too expensive) but i thru the pick away at some point in this period. also John Wetton w King Crimson. of course Stanley Clarke. Scott LaFaro. Buster Williams (w Herbie). F.Z.'s lines for Tom Fowler. yeah.

Re: Your favorite melodic bass lines?
Great suggestions (although I never could stand Duran Duran or Steely Dan ) Of course Jaco and Tony Levin belong in this thread. Another of my all-time favorites is Tony on Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" where the bass line very much carries the song. David Bowie's "Where Are We Now?" is another nice example of a similar style.
