Post subject:  Your favorite melodic bass lines?

This morning, I listened to The Beatles' "Something" and, again, was impressed by Paul's melodic bass playing. A whole composition by itself.
So what are your favorite melodic bass lines?
(Bass riffs like "Another One Bites the Dust" are very cool, but don't count here.)

Leaves are falling all around,
It's time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I'm much obliged
for such a pleasant stay.
But now it's time for me to go.
The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, and with it pain,
and it's headed my way.
Sometimes I grow so tired,
but I know I've got one thing I got to do

Ramble On
The bass riff and all of John Paul Jones stuff on that track = perfect 10

Could pick one of several songs from these bands, but some favorites:

Marillion - Childhood's End

Gentle Giant - Three Friends (maybe cheating a bit since bass is doubled by guitar)

Rush - Digital Man (also possibly the best recorded bass tone ever)

Yes - Tempus Fugit

Oh yes! John Paul Jones is one of my favorites, too.

Great, I didn't think of Marillion, that brings back some memories of that time! :-) (And Yes's "Drama" belongs to the same period for me, memory-wise.)

Rush doesn't do much for me, I'm sorry to say. I'll have to check out Gentle Giant, I don't really know much by them.

I don't want to choose an example from a song but more an idea of a nice bass line. To choose the appropriate note on the bass passing from a chord to another and see (listen) what's going on inside the chords and not only the tonic of each one. The target note is more pleasant to the ear and gives a better result because the flow of your musical phrase is natural.

Wow, this was quite a nostalgic trip! Especially Rob's suggestions. I listened to the Beatles white album almost daily in 1969 and really like McCartney's bass lines. When I started playing myself I turned more to Yes and Gentle Giant for inspiration (along with Hendrix and some delta blues and Chicago blues recordings I taped from radio documentaries). Tried listening to both Rush and Marilion over the years... I do like how the musicians in Marilioin play but the music just doesn't talk to me. Speaking about Chris Squire's bass lines in the Yes we must mention Roundabout here! I love how he plays so few notes with silence between them. Forceful and minimal at the same time. I remember Tony Levin did quite a few bass lines like that in a couple of bands by the late seventies/early eighties and thought that was really cool. But nothing beats Squire's crunchy Rickanbacker poundings.

This one got me listening to bass guitar before I ever picked up an instrument. Very melodic. I can't say all their music is inspiring but this one sure changed the way I thought about bass's role in a rock and roll band. It, and other bass lines by bassist John Taylor remain some of my favorites outside of jazz or afro-cuban music.

Plus it is more fun to watch than Geddy Lee or Chris Spuire! :o

Another one I like is the line to "Heavy Horses" by Jethro Tull.
