How have I not gotten in on this?

Rob mentioned Digital Man, I think you could argue that whole album is chocked full of melodic bass lines. Probably why Signals is one of my favorites!

Being for the Benefit of Mr.Kite has always been my favorite Beatles' song and has that great Paul McCartney line with its melodic fills, and even though this is a sub par recording from a video camera, this version is something else.

On a rockless note:

Not sure how familiar anyone is with Dirty Loops but man can that bass player play. Even if it's just bebop'd pop songs

I like fretless players.... :)

Jan, you mentioned some of my favorites, here. Two of them bring back vivid memories from my adolesence.

Eberhard Weber was one of the first Jazz musicians I listened to. A friend from high school had some United Jazz and Rock Ensemble records and I soon bought a solo record (The Following Morning). He remains one of my favorites.

John Giblin was one of the first bass players I became aware of. One of the first records I bought was Phil Collins' "Hello I Must Be Going", and I loved the bass on "Thru These Walls". I didn't know that it was a fretless bass then (I'm not sure I even knew that such a thing existed), but I noticed his name in the liner notes.

Thank you also for the Guy Pratt link, I didn't know anything he played out of Pink Floyd. His book "My bass and other animals" is a great read. He's a very entertaining storyteller.

Probably doesn't count, but this video kicks all kinds of butt.

Liquid Tension Experiment on their 2008 tour celebrating their reunion and 10th Anniversary. Tony Levin really shines here on Stick. John Petrucci's solo is just amazing, as is Jordan Rudess's on keyboard. If you haven't checked this band's stuff out at all, it's pretty insane.

Dixie Dregs - Night of the Living Dregs

Love Andy West's playing on this and every other Dregs song.

Eberhard Weber...! One of the most melodic bass players ever.

He was the front end of his Colours band, a back end instrument at the front end if you will.

Showing off again, but Eberhard Weber and Colours came to Tasmania AU when I was 13 yrs old. I stood in the wings watched them in amazement , practically sharing in their stage space, then went out front. Later they all came home for a hang, my dad was host.

I chewed off John Marshalls' ears in front of the fire for an hour or so. Eberhard seemed very comfortable in our European type of climate.

Eberhards music is one of my Major influences , as you can imagine.

Luv

Surely one of the best melodic riffs from Eberhard.

Before I fell asleep last night John Entwistle's work on "The Real Me" from The Who's Quadrophenia came to mind. He was just KILLING it all over that album, really.

how true - The Ox really jammed on that tune.
Just an incredible rock-n-roll bassline that was all over the place

had to add a few more for melodic basslines that really can stand out on there own,,and are very memorable.CHRIS SQUIRE time and a word, this track is a must hear;what amazes me about this track is how perfect it is. how about dee murry from elton johns band on goodbye yellowbrick road check out the bassline on GREY SEAL THERE WAS A phenominal and completely underrated bassist of the late eighties and ealy 90's ( a session bassist who played on a lot of christian artists songs) his name is tommy sims. check out his fretless basslines on the WHITEHEART ALBUM " READ THE BOOK ,DONT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE" his most memorable basslines on that album are FLY EAGLE FLY , and his best most pino ish fretless bass line on MAYBE TODAY where he utilizes an octave divider and chorus pedal together to create ,dare i say , one of the most organic sounding basses ive ever heard ,the bassline completely stands on it's own as most of what makes this arrangement. he also played on MARGERET BECKER'S SIMPLE HOUSE. ON THE SONG SIMPLE HOUSE tommy sims plays an outrageously audacious bass line which sounds to me like a musicman fretless with flatwound strings, fantastic track. im confident to say that anything tommy sims has played on is great , he really is quite an artist : knows when and when not to hit a note or how long to let it sustain before abruptly cutting it at just the right time.his work with charlie peacock and michael w smith are also memorable. legendary to me. I AM SURPRISED THAT MARK KING HASNT BEEN MENTIONED. I do feel that the whole guaranteed album should not be forgotten , great listen for great arrangement basslines. PINO PALLADINO'S WORK on between two fires ; amazing and the song GET HERE from OLETA ADAMS and A LOT OF HIS WORK ON JOAN ARMATRADINGS SONGS.
