i've watched this video i don't know how many times and it never fails to be amazing. i can't imagine what goes on his head to make him able to create this stuff.

sometimes "wow!" just doesn't cover it.

True for sure but
in this case it is a 'cover'...

It's all great music to me, but the one part that he plays is probably one of the most recognizable bass solo's in modern jazz...

I was in the right place at the right time and saw a show from this tour in 78 :D.

Here is a video:

And a factoid:

Note: when the link shows up click on the first link below that says;

"Heavy Weather Album"...

IMHO Weather report was one of the greatest bands of all time, with and without Jaco.

The Zawinul Syndicate was the later day incarnation of WR and toured the world playing small clubs until Joe Zawinul's death in 2007.

More history:

Forgive me jwanka if I am giving you a history lesson, no ego in this from me (we can leave
the ego stuff to Jaco) But if you are un familiar with the origins of this music you are in for a
very rewarding musical exploration.

One of the things I really admire about Manring is that despite the obvious influences (including being a student of Jaco's at one point), he went on exploring and finding his own style.

Cheers.

Thanks for posting that video link, Joseph! It's one of my fav Weather Report pieces and it was fun to see Manring layer all the parts normally played by other instruments. Maybe he got bored for a minute with just covering the WP boys into a loop and thus decided to through in Hendrix Purple Haze theme? It was also great to check out the WP video; JP was phenomenal!

Love Manring! I've always been impressed that someone can do such a good job of captivating an audience as a solo bassist. He pulls it off though through the combination of wonderful playing and good stories (that he tells whilst re-tuning :-)).

Certainly one of my own career highlights so far was doing an opening set for Manring several years ago that included a final encore of Manha de Carnaval featuring Manring, Greg Howard, and myself. Way fun!

I've had the pleasure of taking a couple master classes from Manring, and have seen him perform in a friends living room a few times locally. He and Michael Hedges seem to be carved from the same tree. He is currently incorporating eastern timings and a unique percussive techniques with his right hand fingers. He's a true genius in the innovation and expansion of his instrument. I inquired what he thought of the stick, he confessed he had owned one for a few years, but he was not forthright with the reasoning behind selling it. He surely makes everything possible on a 4 string hyperbass, so I expect he has no need for so many strings.

Wow, you guys are so lucky to have had a chance to spend some time with him! I've heard from various sources that he's super nice and no ego/drama whatsoever.

@glenn - i'm new so excuse this if it's aready posted someplace, but i'd love to see a video of that show and the encore.
