I've always loved the cello, but wow, when you loop it, it's something else entirely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYrcXX4nWOA Zoe really has it all; amazing cello technique, incredible musical ideas and an absolute command of how to loop it all together (she has some interesting techniques using Ableton live, but I don't' fully understand all the add-ins unfortunately). I saw her play a show live and it was a couple hours of wonderful music like this. Her self-distributed albums are also great listens too. |

I love Zoe's music but I've only seen her live once. She came out into the audience after the show to chat and answer questions. If you get a chance to see her again, stick around and you can probably find out a lot about how she does what she does. |

Zoe uses SooperLooper on a Mac. The Ableton Live is just the host for the SooperLooper AU plugin. However, sometimes she uses MIDI clips in Live that sends control data to SooperLooper - but that's just a way of automating what she would otherwise be doing by tap dancing on the MIDI pedalboard. One kick on a pedal switch triggers a MIDI clip that then spills out a bunch of commands for SooperLooper over a number of bars. |

This was the first I've seen of her looping and it is pretty intricate. Seems like the automation is programmed to record specific segments of music, and loops recorded early in the performance return much later. A foreground riff played at the beginning might show up near the end as a background ostinato. In a sense the automation is like a template that could be used for many different songs. Very intriguing. I feel a Max4Live patch starting to emerge... |
