Re: André Pelat's wonderful "Concerto pour Stick Chapman"
He's not reading a score. I questioned him privately, that it sounds improvised, but in loosely composed sections, each with its own intricate two-handed sub-technique for orchestral variation.
No, he said, it's played note for note as he wrote it on The Stick over several years. I guess if you write the song, memory is not a problem. Still, the sensation I feel is one of endlessly variable improvisation. I guess that's the mark of a successful composition, the music evolving "of its own", seemingly without effort.
The instrument is like a grand piano in André's hands and he plays it almost acoustically in his austerely royal room. Reminds me of Bob a bit, with the long limb span (the better to hear your lowest frequencies), the purity of purpose, and a huge scope of orchestral technique (the better to blow you away).
Many thanks André, and I hope your Concerto will be a YouTube hit.

The present day composer refuses to die! Viva la Stick! (he gets pretty funky around 6:30...)

André is such a wonderful musician... I remember when I first met him, I think it was 1992 at a Stick Seminar in Belgium: he blew everybody away, his musicianship was just so advanced. Hs old ironwood Stick was also the most worn I've ever seen! He had played a lot on every single area of the instrument... Most Stick players will have favourite spots, he had played all over his instrument. And, on top of that, he is a very humble and incredibly nice person, it's always a joy to meet him.
Emmett, are the extra frets on the melody side a factory addition? André sure puts them to good use.

Yes, a very interesting and well played piece. Being new to the Stick, I was floored at the intricate cross rhythms between hands.
A thing I noticed in the recording, which I'm sure is normal as no one has commented on it. The recording sounds as if it were recorded with a live mic instead of direct to mixer. In it, we can hear the strings hitting to frets especially on lower bass strings.
Normal, correct? (I hear this on my Stick also).

A live microphone recording indeed with all usual noises. I wish André had also recorded it direct but I highly respect his choices. By the way, he's also an excellent teacher.

Beautiful...and he's using the whole range of his instrument. Many things to learn about in this video.

One other thing ... he isn't using a belt or a lap bar, but some type of strap set up. That's interesting because it might allow him to sit or stand without the Stick changing position. Anyone know anything about that strap setup?

Last time I saw him played, he used to use a kind of scarf, but I bet something similar could work, like this guitar strap. Seems a very good idea, but didn't have a try myself.

There are so many good ideas in this! Every time I watch it I find more . So amazing, nice Stick too . I guess you get a few grey hairs to be able to play like that . *j* .~
