Post David Tipton Plays "Wrecking Ball"
David does it again! Talk about making a silk purse out of sow's ear.... This reminds of Herbie Hancock's album "The New Standard" where he spun so-so tunes into gold...

Wow, great ! Another song for my play list! What's the secret of hearing a stick tune in a song ?

Cheers,
Bas

Seriously, on the Dutch national radio, they have bands covering songs that are in the charts, it's amazing how sometimes a really shitty song is turned into a kick ass song (ofcourse, the opposite also happens hahaha)

Bas

I'm not sure how big of a deal it was outside of the midwest, but "hardcore" metal bands here in the American midwest would cover modern pop songs in a very predictable way. Lots of Lady Gaga going around.

I couldn't listen through the entire original version of this song, but this is just brilliant.

Joseph great post- always a great post with my good friend Dave Tipton on it!

Rather than think "is there a Stick Tune in there", approach it "Why isn't there a Stick Tune in there?"

IMHO you can play anything on the Stick- you may have to work to get to it, but look at Bob C's videos where he strums, taps harmonics, plays right over the frets making each note distinct with staccato, and he even taught me the ZZ Top bend and pop a note with a harmonic using his pinky to get the harmonic.

A good song is a good song if it is broken down into melody and chords, or a vocal and a guitar or a piano. Stripped away from all the filters, loops, sweeps, and production values- does it work on a basic level to interest you and carry you somewhere else- is the key.

Dave is brilliant song stylist and can pick them. His arrangements are always flawless, voicings smooth and there is always high performance value. Dave told me a lot of this deals with him playing out a lot and handling requests, and it shows magnificently.

YOU CAN SEE, HEAR AND ASK DAVE A MYRIAD OF QUESTIONS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL AT THE PITTSBURGH SEMINAR APRIL 6TH LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY! WE HAVE SEVERAL SLOTS LEFT. GET VERY PERSONAL TRAINING AND LESSONS FROM GREG, DAVE OR ME TOO! PLEASE COME IT IS A GREAT WAY TO MEET OTHER STICKISTS AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND COME AWAY WITH NEW PERSPECTIVES AND APPROACHES TO YOUR OWN PLAYING AND GOALS.

great post,
Dave Brosky

I'm surprised as well, hearing aspects of that song I hadn't heard before (being too distracted). DT is like a prospector who finds the veins.

I love song arrangement on Stick but I never know for sure what will be grist for my musical mill until I get my hands around it. I have a 50/50 success rate, my heart often falling for a song but my hands won't comply.

Can't pin it down except that it has something to do with the harmony. If the song is somehow "inopportune" for creative chord progressions and substitutions, my interest is lost. (It's an old jazz ethic tho I don't necessarily play that style.)
