Wow, did you get to meet him?

Alas ... no. My first summer there was in 1977.

We did perform "Fanfare for the Common Man" that summer if that counts for anything :-)

Aaron Copland IS American music. It's like listening to an Ansel Adams photo or a Georgia O'Keefe painting.

I have a history/photo book from Interlochen that dates back to it's beginning in 1927. The book is loaded with photos of composers like Copland, Hanson, Barber, and Sousa staying for extended visits working with the World Youth Symphony on their own works. I get chills looking at the photos sometimes.

Hanson composed some of the Romantic Symphony while staying at Interlochen. There is a short section of that piece that became the "Interlochen Theme" and to this day, every concert during the summer arts camp ends with it and the audience is instructed not to applaud afterward.

And to bring this all back to the Stick ...

I once heard Larry Tuttle perform Sousa's "Washington Post March" on the Stick.

It's not something I would have even considered. If there was one person who could pull it off though, it'd be Larry and he nailed it.
