Tea in the Sahara - StringStation
One of my friends has been telling me about this guy.....talk about having a vision for your instrument and the music you can create with it.

Re: Tea in the Sahara - StringStation
Stringstation...is that the name of the instrument?
If I had 4 sticks with Midi, played them all at once, lying flat....I wonder if it would have the same effect

Re: Tea in the Sahara - StringStation
I don't know about this one. It seems like the reverb is the only thing that holds the song together while the rest is an exploration in tone and attack. Maybe a harpejji is the right answer for people that want a more square instrument played sitting down. I can't rule it out, but the video left me with more questions than answers.

Re: Tea in the Sahara - StringStation
I like strings a lot, needless to say, so I was immediately hooked, immersed in the orchestra of spontaneous string performance. And there was The Stick in the forefront, holding up unique and creative bass lines. I'll bet this old Stick needs a setup and some reworking tho.
No face, no name, just beautifully lush music that extends sharp, then flat, sometimes in both directions at once. This music is familiar to my inner ear, broadening the pallet of "harmony".
It's Jim Bartz and his StringStation machine. I had to search Stickwire discussions from 2005.

I like it because he makes interesting sounds without basing it all on melodies. But I do think he could have played softer and slower, maybe he drank way too much coffee while plugging everything in and adjusting the levels of is Shebang Orchestra...? Check his site: http://www.stringstation.com/

Re: Tea in the Sahara - StringStation
There's a guy around L.A. named Chas Smith that this guy reminds me of except Chas makes his own museum quality kinetic art instruments from scratch out of titanium and steel in a million dollar machine shop and are bowed, plucked, struck with mallets but my favorites are his steel guitars from the future - waaaay in the future. You hear him a lot in major motion pictures. Here's a video on his Sound EFX contribution to a recent movie: http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2013/09/ ... me-sounds/ He is also a jazz and classical musician w/an advanced music degree and a real character. Chas is a close friend and soulmate and it's on his Bridgeport mill that the central body of the Lap Dawg is cut out. Sorry for the hijack but I thought some may find him of interest as well...Avant garde to say the least.
