My brother belongs to a very good choral group called The Androscoggin Chorale (named after the county in Maine), and Jen had encouraged me to think about joining, if I liked it enough.
I thought about having something like this to do with my brother, and I thought I'd at least give it a try. So I went to their first rehearsal of the new season last night.
I was at it for the entire rehearsal with the group, for 3 hours. (The pieces were requiems by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé.) Nerves aside, at least vocally, I acquitted myself ok. However, I can't sight-read/sight sing well, and although I was able to catch on to my parts after a quick read and a first pass or two, it was painfully clear that I was going to have to do an enormous amount of homework every week in order to get my parts together. And that's time I just do not have right now. I'm lucky if I get an hour to practice Stick every day, and that's my focus.
So, I won't be joining the chorale - THIS season. But one of these days, I would love to do it. The music is gorgeous and the people are good - and a very talented bunch. And I haven't been in a band with my brother since I was 13!
Conclusion: I am really, REALLY glad I went and did that last night.

Great post, Luc, a success in so many ways...

I was once in a band that had a song called "Opportunity, or Distraction"(I wish I could remember the lyrics), but it was mainly about this feeling of re-affirming what is essential.

At Santa Monica College, one had to be a part of some sort of ensemble work and I chose Choir. It was very rewarding to be working with so many people and see the conductor lead the many different sections of the choir with such vision.

I highly recommend it as part of anyone's musical vocabulary as it forces one to play a very different one that we are used to in the Stick world, where we are often the sole source of sound and interest. We stick out.

In the choir, the idea is not to Stick but to compliment the section to which you are assigned. I am having good memories just thinking about this Luc - GREAT POST!

I used to say that singing in a choir is something I'll save for my next life, being busy playing in bands, string quartets and orchestras at different points in my life. But then the opportunity arose to sing in a choir together with my wife.
I've been doing it for two years now and I have to say I'm enjoying it tremendously! It's a whole different way to make music for a hard-core instrumentalist like me, using only my body for the production of sound. (Of course, as instrumentalist you should use your whole body, too. But that's another thing.)
An added bonus is the friendly atmosphere in our choir. So I can recommend singing in a choir to everybody!
