Yep, Victor. I'm with you, Steve. A musician through and through. Saw him play with Keith Horn (another monster bassist) and his brother, Rudy Wooten, on sax. I think Rudy was a schizophrenic, and he died recently. Great musicians, the whole family.

Oh, the man himself:
Abe Laboriel...
(around 9:38...talk about fat bass tone - no scoop!)

And played on an 8 string!

and honestly one of the best jazz guitar solos I have ever heard by Lee Ritenour...

When I started playing bass in the 80's my goal was being Mark King
I still dig "A physical presence": in many ways I feel MK is underrated, his pizzicato playing is very tasteful and funky too and he's a great singer.

Nowadays I mostly listen to old school funk, really digging Larry Graham and Louis Johnson.
Always loved Marcus Miller too, arguably the ultimate slap tone.

I don't really slap that much myself, but recently I did use that technique for a jingle: I sent several different lines and they wanted the one "that sounds like the Seinfeld theme" (incidentally, the Seinfeld theme is not a bass, it's a keyboard!).

Best thing Berlin ever did was "The Bruford Tapes." Beelzebub, Hell's Bells, Sahara of Snow, Fainting in Coils, etc. Great material.

Agreed. He didn't suck in "Water on the Brain" with Holdsworth, either.

Also a great slapper when needed.
Check out his solo bass performance of Tears In Heaven.
Jeff is incredibly musical. Great ears and taste.

Ivan Rougny. I really like his work in Morglbl, a band that puts the power in power trio.

Here is a silly solo example he does with MIDI back tracks.

Enjoy.

We were slated to play with Morglbl in Norfolk last year, had to pull out because of illness. Bummer. Good band.
