Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
This is really something else....the dynamics and phrasing (particularly the subtle bending and wavers) are so incredibly appropriate for this tune and exactly inline with what what you'd expect to hear (and then some) in a more traditional setting. Greg's technique is flawless and there are are so many different things going on at the same time, but they all serve the tune and the improvisation extremely well. The musical ideas in this video are amazing. It's also a textbook example (to me anyway) on how to render the head of a tune, build from there, go really outside and then bring it back in at the end.
I have a friend at work who's a very accomplished upright jazz bass player and he's been skeptical about the Stick as a viable jazz instrument. I pointed out the origins of the instrument as a logical extension of Emmett's early jazz guitar work, I explained who the Stick has elements of guitar, keyboard and percussion, I even went on for a bit about the symmetrical nature of the board and the benefits for the 5ths/4ths tuning from my limited understanding. Wasn't going anywhere...
...then I played this video.
That pretty much ended the debate. =)

Re: Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
I grew up with this tune (my dad was a jazz guy) and must have heard it a thousand times by a hundred different artists. This version is my favorite one by far and my favorite Greg Howard video. Think I'll watch it again

Re: Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
Thanks everyone,
It's by far my favorite song I've learned to perform, so simple and yet so much to work with.. I'll be playing it this week in my two solo concerts in Tidewater, that's for sure...
This was a really fun concert for me. My first time in Japan in a packed little club in Tokyo...

Re: Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
Ok Greg, your comment has inspired me to at least check out the online tabs and sheet music and give it a go. Yes, I am totally butchering the hell out of a wonderful tune (sorry Dad) but I'm also having a good bit of fun. Thanks! No, I will not post a video

Re: Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
Here's a lead sheet I wrote for the Uptet of the tune. The chords I use are close to the Real Book chords, but a bit different, and it's a waltz, not 4/4. Have fun! Attachment: porkpie.mus-.pdf

Re: Greg Plays "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"
Hey thanks Greg! I been working with a very simple arrangement for bass side of piano but I'm sure this will work MUCH better on Stick Thanks for sharing! This forum is great.
