As a former bass player, I used to be a huge fan of Gary Willis. I just found this video with a very funny and useful tip to work upon dynamics. I wonder if this tip could be applied to the Stick. |

If you play your stronger attack on the "and" you're really close to the jazz feeling of the 8th notes swing understanding... 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and weak stong weak strong weak strong weak strong |

Playing stronger "ands" is more modern than traditional swing. Coltrane took it a step further and could play short, long. That's more difficult. |

Not too long Tatsu...that is exactly where I can hear a "simili jazz swing"...in fact I don't like it when it's too long. Many schools try to explain this swing in 2 different ways...The first 8th note is played with a dot (longer) and of course the second one is shorter...or...the 2 first notes of a triplet are tied and the last is played appart. The way I hear it, it's a combination of these 2 techniques without exageration combined with what we see in this video. |

Yeah, that "dotted eighth with sixteenth" swing ... I do not dig it, except in very rare cases. Sounds very clumsy and awkward to me (again, most of the time). Or maybe I just need to hear it done well more often... Meanwhile, give me that beautiful, lush, rolling triplet-feel swing. |
