Re: Ten Hands & The Gone Men
Quote: You could have moved to Denton and STILL taken drugs!
So you knew Matt! I never had a conversation with him, but I thought his drumming was bewitching. I saw him play with Ten Hands of course, and later with the Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, who were really hot in '85. When the New Bo's came to NYC to play SNL, Matt hooked up with the SNL band, and Edie hooked up with Paul Simon...
But when I moved into the Sycamore St. house, where Gary & Matt used to live, Dave Palmer still lived across the street. He didn't leave town until '93 or so. That guy could play the keys. He was maybe the best jazz/funk/pop pianist who ever lived in Denton, and I'm including Lyle Mays here. He could handle bass, chords, & melody all at once, in a very agressive way, and he could carry a whole band, like Fats Waller could. Everyone with an ear was intrigued by his style.
He put keyboards first. Girlfriends were second, and that was that. I wish I could have been that way, but I adored girls too much. That, and my habit of switching instruments every few years, kept me firmly among the third-rate...
I met Matt once or twice, didn't know him. I grew up with Palmer, and his brother, Robert. I met Dave through my older brother, who went to Kempsville High with him, but I had much more in common with Dave than my brother Gerry did and we became tight for many years. Still speak to him. My plan was for him to pick me up from the airport if I had made it to last year's Free Hands Academy. He lives in Ojai now. I am a musician because of Dave and my oldest brother, Grant. Dave would come to the house irritatingly early, fix breakfast and slay the piano until I was ready to go the beach, or whatever biking adventure we were doing that day. Lots of parties, lots of adventures with that guy. So many stories. We used to play D&D in my mom's game room, with a large group of friends. I think I was 12 when we met. I don't get to see him much anymore... his dad got sick, and the family relocated to a retirement home in NC, and as a result he visits them there instead of making trips here. Yep, Dave slays. He was a more aggressive player then than now, I think, although I don't get to see what he does in his own gigs or in various living-room scenarios anymore. Who could fault the guy for becoming an in-demand session/tour player instead of a prog dork like me? The world was a darker place when he left the beach, and I should have followed him. I wrestle with that fact often. Small world, Rodan. Did you know Earl Harvin or any of his other friends at that time?

Rodan, Here's what Dave is up to now: http://davepalmermusic.com/I think he's doing more film and TV scores than touring now. More money, more satisfying work. Kev

I am not seeing that the embedded vimeo player is working, but here is a link to Matt hitting, owning and generally just owning.

Didn't he play in Critters Buggin? Our drummer gave me one of their CDs ("Guest"). I love it.

Re: Ten Hands & The Gone Men
I never talked with Earl, but I knew about him. Everybody did! He succeeded Matt Chamberlain in Ten Hands. The band was sad to see Matt leave, but when they auditioned Earl, they were really glad. I got to see Ten Hands with Earl also. The Fry St. Fair comes to mind, can't remember what year, might have been '87, around the time I got my first ironwood Stick and got Gary to give me lessons.
Earl and Dave had a band didn't they - the Earl Harvin trio? Can't remember who played bass, mighta been Fred Hamilton (who still lives in Denton, and teaches at UNT College of Music.)

Yeah, Critterz was the rhythm core of the New Bohemians, Matt, Brad and John. They teamed up with Skerik and put out a few albums and toured. John had split the day before we opened up for them, so they were just a trio. Still pretty rad.

Re: Ten Hands & The Gone Men
Like many Texans, Ten Hands was my intro to the Stick. Good music. Great memories.
And great video Roy. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, they played together a lot. I saw a few shows of the MC 900 ft. Jesus tour, went on the bus, etc. Fucking incredible musicians, insane music performed live. A 9-piece band with remarkable musicians, horns, tabla, guitar, keys, etc. Earl was also in Rubber Bullet. Cool punk shit. Heard a lot about Fred from Dave. K

Critters Buggin': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critters_BugginOK, their percussionist was Matt Dillon, who was with Ten Hands. He was my favorite Ten Hands percussionist, and is back with the group after many years. He plays vibes too. I tried to sell him my marimba once, for enough money to buy a Roland JC120, but he couldn't come up with the bread. R

Re: Ten Hands & The Gone Men
Fred Hamilton's a super nice guy. Very Christian. The only guy I knew who taught both jazz bass AND jazz guitar at U. of N. TX. His son & his young family have moved across the street from us.
