Shredding a Balalaika
OMG, This fellow is just an unbelievable musician. Check out what he can do with this Balalaika - 3 strings, tuned EEA ! That's right 2 of the 3 strings are the same note!! I shudder to think what he could do with a Stick! Aleksei Arkhipovsky http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Phmxpk4b9o

Really nice use of delay especially, and I love the sound of the really high notes he plays. the wole section after 36:00 is really beautiful. Thanks for the link. Re: Shredding a Balalaika
Every individual note rings out so clearly, regardless of how fast he plays. His intonation is beautiful, and as you said Greg, his use of delay is just the right touch. Thanks for the link. Here it is, embeddedThanks for that Greg. I searched the forum for quite a while but could not find a way to embed a video. Would it be too much to ask for a sticky, or an easy to find link, to explain how to do that? If you could explain it here, that would help. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who could use some pointers for this

Re: Shredding a Balalaika
That was really good, great player! Looks like it has 6 strings though, behind the bridge....I know theres only 3 pegs,...but. I thought the family friendly theatrics he was peppering throughout the show took away from the gravity, but, again an amazing player.
cheers, kev

Re: Shredding a Balalaika
Along the same lines - mandolin has 8 strings but since they're in unison pairs it's harmonically essentially a 4 stringed instrument. Same notes and scale length as a violin. Most agree Evan is this instruments' greatest living player and he has traveled the world performing as guest soloist in major symphony orchestras. He happens to live near me here in L.A. so I know him and studied a bit with him over the last 10 years and when I left the Riders of the Purple Sage in 2006 he replaced me in that band - applying this style to bluegrass and americana. What he can do with a flatpick is beyond many professional mandolinists comprehension - let alone physical capabilities. I studied long enough to understand how he does it but can't do much of it myself. Fascinating to behold.

Re: Shredding a Balalaika
The harmonics he's playing at the end of it all are just amazing...
