Post Re: what kind of music do you listen to except Stick ?
Interestingly enough ... I have no Stick players in regular rotation. I'm kind of with Michael on music played on the Stick in general. Back when the website was first re-designed, I wrote a lot of reviews and listened to a lot of Stick records and, quite frankly, burned out a little. Looking back, the ones that I'll still pull out occasionally are the ones that I thought were just wonderful works and it didn't matter to me whether they were done on the Stick or any other instrument. The top three that come to mind are Gordian Knot (first one), Cides "Primitivo", and Greg's "Lift". An honorable mention also goes out to Third Door Down's "Refraction" record that was a collection of wonderfully crafted pop tunes.

For me, soundtracks have always been a major influence. Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Thomas Newman, etc. Followed by old prog(ish) rock and classic pop. Floyd, early Genesis, Beatles, Supertramp. These days I love most of the Porcupine Tree collection.

Well, I kept my post strict to the topic.
If I should widen it to "which is my musical background" I should say Pink Floyd along with Gerry Mulligan and ELP were among other great LPs, I discovered at home because my parents were buying them in the '70. I knew Genesis and I played their music for a quite long time as a bass (and 12 strings guitar) player in the '80 (never as a professional, just for fun). Police, Sting, James Taylor, Pat Metheny...

I don't listen to a lot of "Stick music". While I do enjoy a wide variety of musical genres (modern country and vocal jazz being among the few on the "sh*t list"), I am mostly a rock and metal guy.

I don't do well picking favourites or compiling lists, but I often say my big three are...

RUSH
Metallica
and
Led Zeppelin

Honourable mentions...

Ween (one of the bands I most try to emulate), Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Tom Petty, Corrosion of Conformity, Iron Maiden, Clutch, Type O Negative, Opeth, Devin Townsend(local hero), Gojira, Fear Factory, Jethro Tull, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and many, many more.

This is a great thread Boaz, thanks for starting this.

Once one is able to get over the novelty of the instrument and where it sits in an ensemble, or one has found their sound as a soloist, you can get to making music. Prog loves the Chapman Stick, but there is more to it than that.

I tend to favor music to which I cannot compare other music. That could be a reason that I enjoy playing the Stick so much. While some of these artists in hindsight are easy to categorize or typify by genre, they were, in their time, something special (to me anyway).

A list of ten artists off the top of my head that I fall back on are
Bill Frisell
Nick Drake
the Cocteau Twins
the Jungle Brothers
Beastie Boys
John Scofield
David Bowie (not such a fan of Tin Machine)
Paul Simon
Joni Mitchel
and of course, my favorite, which has already been mentioned here, XTC. There should be a thread on English Settlement - one of my favorite albums of all time. The combination of Andy Patridge, Colin Moulding and Dave Gregory is something special.

Newer artists I am starting to discover (and rediscover) would include Bjork
Courtney Barnett
Radiohead (whose influence on popular music has been more profound than some may realize)
Owl City
Michael Franti
Telekinesis
Tesseract
Don Peyote
Emily King
Cocorosie
Fall Out boy (there I said it)
Little Dragon
...and trying out a little Steve Wilson (although I've only heard a few by him, Andy turned me on to him big time last summer). Also LOVING the Fado Trio that Rodrigo hit me to (and plays in - good on you man!).

Looking forward to digging through some of the stuff people add here.

[emoji106] Gene: we were just playing last night and I brought the stick for the guys to see: there's a million Fado instrumental pieces for the Portuguese Guitar that would go perfectly on stick... "So much to do, so little time..." :)

funny micro story Sacrosanct ...I teach guitar, bass, drums and even one Stick student at the Paul Green Rock Academy. About a year ago I was on a break and met one of the teachers I had yet to speak to while working there. He was smart, funny and humble. Later on in the week we chatted some more, where then he told me who he was...none other than Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) of Ween. Only then did I actually start listening to them for the first time...great stuff.
