Ok, I want to play...

Old School... Younger Days but currently still in high rotation.
Earlier Genesis/Yes/ELP/KC/Gabriel...the latter two, for obvious reasons,
were the gateways to my STICK obsession
Joni Mitchell
Thomas Dolby
CSN
J. Browne/Raitt/Heart/
Paula Cole

New School... Current "Younger Days...AARP version!!" ;)
California Guitar Trio
Jaco Pastorius....ok, I know I'm late to this party but he's still relevant!
Steven Wilson...can't wait for Friday's concert...woot!
Mariusz Duda/Riverside/Lunatic Soul/ Opeth....dabbling
Pentatonix/Postmodern Jukebox

It's a girl thing...Kate Davis and Kina Grannis

Here's my top artists ever since 1985 (at age 12). I'm mostly a rock guy, with some jazz and classical in there.

Rock:
U2
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Lush
Smashing Pumpkins
Primus
Dixie Dregs
Steve Morse
Kansas (so underrated)
The rest, I hate to admit, is tried and true progressive rock from the 1970's (ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Rush, Genesis, Gentle Giant). However, here's some lesser knowns (70s and 2000s) from that genre that I really enjoy to this very day. The obscure acts are the best.
Soft Machine
Starcastle
Magma
Spock's Beard
Echolyn
Djam Karet
The Flower Kings
Trent Gardner's Magellan
Dream Theater
Jordan Rudess

Julie Slick (a bassist who tours with Adrian Belew - she's a rising star)

Jazz (starting from '93):
Miles Davis
Stanley jordan
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Thelonious Monk

Classical:
Bartok
Mussorgsky
Bach
Ravel
Chopin

I listen to a lot of different things. Right now, I'm on a kick finding heavy metal covers of ABBA tunes.

But on the regular:
Kevin Gilbert
Mushroomhead
Dream Theater
Spock's Beard
Blues Traveler

How is it possible? So much.

In my record rack rotation now
Mozart Piano Concertos #17 and #21 - Géza Anda
Sargasso Sea - John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner
Aerial Boundaries - Michael Hedges
Blonde On Blonde - Dylan
The Köln Concert - Keith Jarrett
Le Tombéau De Couperin - The Philadelphia Orchestra w Eugene Ormandy
Erik Satie: The Velvet Gentleman - Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group
Diary - Ralph Towner
Jack Johnson - Miles Davis
As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls - Metheny & Mays
Organ Grinder Swing - Jimmy Smith
Ambient 4 On Land - Brian Eno
Cello Quartet - Roger Kelloway
Missouri Sky - Charlie Haden & Pat Metheney
Prelude - Deodato
I just discovered this old vinyl, which I had tucked away in storage of Deodato, put it on and a rush of memories with his disco version of Also Sprach Zarathustra. Stanley Clarke has a bass solo on that track with Billy Cobham on drums!!!!
The track sounded so familiar, I was trying to place where I heard it, when a Stickist friend, Eliah Levy played a video from the Hal Ashby movie, BEING THERE, featuring that tune in a very big way.

Early influence (still listening)
My band
Butterfiled Blues Band
BB King
Hendrix
Jeff Beck
Cream
Beatles
Stones
Dylan
Donavan
Joni Mitchell
Stevie Wonder
Them
Animals
Zombies
Kinks
Lovin' Spoonful
Moby Grape
I'm old :)

Jazz
Coltrane
Mingus
Miles
Monk
John McLaughlin
Weather Report
Chick Corea

Lots of old blues

Pop/Rock
Too many to mention

All-time faves
Ravel: Concerto in G - Charles Munch conducts Orchestre de Paris
RonRoco - Gustavo Santaolalla
Belladonna - Daniel Lanois
There Will Be Blood soundtrack - Jonny Greenwood
Right Now Move - Charlie Hunter Quintet
Apollo - Eno
Tweekend - Crystal Method
Facing You - Jarrett

and...
Fight of The Cosmic Hippo - Béla Fleck & The Flecktones
Martinis & Bikinis - Sam Phillips
My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts - Eno/Byrne
East-West - Buttrerfield Blues Band
Histoire Du Soldat - Stravinsky conducts Columbia Symphony
Nilsson Schmilsson - Harry Nilsson

Do you own all these on vinyl? My friend Mike Graham who owns a new and used record store would love to see and hear some of those. If you are ever passing through Erie, Pa be sure to make some time to visit his place "Graham's Records and Collectibles", you could spend hours there just browsing. Not really a plug for his store as much as a heads up for anyone who appreciates music on vinyl.

Actually that really did sound like spam for his shop. I guess since he isn't a chain and you can only purchase any of his stock at the building where sells them, maybe it doesn't count as real spam! ;) Sorry if it came off that way.

Mike

Most. Yes.

These at the end are CDs:
RonRoco - Gustavo Santaolalla
Belladonna - Daniel Lanois
There Will Be Blood soundtrack - Jonny Greenwood
Right Now Move - Charlie Hunter Quintet
Apollo - Eno
Tweekend - Crystal Method
Martinis & Bikinis - Sam Phillips

I don't get out to PA too often, though. :(

RonRoco is a phenomenal album. Pretty rare too. Gustavo Santaolalla recorded it in 1998 with regional acoustic string players. That album blew the doors wide open to a career in film scoring. All the big directors started asking him for his music after this bereakthrough album.

K Rex- THE ART BEARS? "Hopes and Fears" cleared my basement faster than Beefheart back in the day. Dagmar Krause is one of the scariest singers i've ever heard. and on what i listen to, the only stuff that still keeps my interest these days is Monk, Dolphy, and Bjork

Hey man,

Yes, Art Bears were one of my favorites. They are Henry Cow's nightmare. Fantastic stuff. I really liked Bjork, too. And Eric Dolphy. Nobody mentioned Ornette, either. Very important.
