Post Larger Than Life - Piano and Stick Improvisation
To start off the new year right, here is a fourteen minute piano/Stick duet. The Stick is a 12-string Bamboo model with PASV4 pickups recorded through a Line 6 Helix. Both tracks were improvised in one take. Thanks for listening!

Very cool. I am contemplating picking up a Helix; I dig yer tone, man! Now you are able to run both sides of the Stick into that via the Aux in right? And then create a chain for each side, correct?

Thanks! Oddly, the Aux input is the wrong impedance and, unlike the returns, cannot be changed. I use the return as an input and all is well. I am very happy with the Helix.

Jacubert, I absolutely love this kind of one-take improv, and you sustain the 14 minutes throughout with your awesome piano playing and Sticking. I felt that the majority of the attention and interest was in the piano--and the Stick playing seemed to be reacting to the piano, which I'm assuming came first.

I started writing down times that I liked what was going on the best. Most of the high-interest moments to me seemed to come regularly on every 2-minute intervals or so. I just wrote down times as I was listening every time I thought things were really cooking, so my many highlights (purely subjectively to me of course) were the following times (approximate):
2:00, 4:00, 4:40, 5:00, 5:40, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00 (Bass! Only here?), 8:00, 9:00-ish (melody guitar line is melodic), 9:26, 10:00-11:15 (my favorite, particularly right at 10:00), 12:45 (kicking! Solo-ish)...and we fade out.

Sorry I can't be more specific than just noting the times that I especially liked. You're an awesome piano player (that's my background and I'm a new Stickist, so I'm focusing on what I'm best at) and this was a nice improv jam. I appreciate you doing this and recording this! Not just because it was good, and you're good, but because it validates this longform of expression to me (meaning, I'd do a lot more of it if I actually thought I could get people to listen to it.) Cheers! Good job!

I really appreciate the comments paigan0. You are correct! The primary instrument here is the piano. I plan to flip it on the next piece and make the Stick the primary instrument. For a great long form Stick improvisation, check out Greg Howard's Water on the Moon.

One way I keep myself from falling asleep while improvising is to try to come up with a theme I can come back to - a home base. This helps keep the different sections connected to each other and provides the listener with something recognizable, I look forward to hearing what you come up with!

Thanks.

Jeremy

Brao Jeremy, I love that a lot. I like to do the same but never published on my side. Well...I don't think so...lol. First, I love improvisation...and what you do is really good. Then we can feel the interaction between the 2 instruments...congratulations...
