I'd be scared to eat THAT mushroom. Whatever vision you stepped into, you might never come back.

I've got a bunch of stuff worked out by hand for fractal music but I've never actualized it. It has felt to me like fractals went out of style musically. But maybe I'll post some stuff up when I get settled. My life is still up in the air.

Cheers, Tatsu! I'm curious as to what "fractal music" is, and why it's already out of style musically!

I'm just pairing my music with the fractal videos--they're not fractal music, per se, although "Fractals," the piano piece, does have repeating themes and tonal centers that are explored. I'm not sure exactly how "fractal music" would work but putting the old imaginer brain on it, I'd say a small snippet of musical fugue or riff if you will, that gets expanded and expanded, with the main theme having little snippets either figuratively or rhythmically or melodically. So a larger theme that is composed of smaller versions of that theme, that can be broken down into smaller versions of that theme...I get it in words, but I'm having trouble imagining what an actual piece would sound like.

I'm very curious as to what "fractal music" means to you, Tatsu!

(Thinking about my own explanation for what I think fractal music is, I believe that I have something in mind that fits my description: Bach, the man, good ole' J.S. His themes are often little themes built up into bigger themes, as I've described. I suspect that Tatsu has something else in mind--but damn, I loves me some Bach.)

Coincidentally on posting this thread about fractal videos, just yesterday I finally got Mandelbulber to work correctly as a server/client to divide up the rendering. I had been running two computers at the same time, and just dividing up the frames between them. That was fairly efficient, but then I had to manually transfer frames from both computers and put them all together, and one computer would inevitably finish its frames quicker than the other, and then I'd have to divide the remaining frames between them, and repeat until finished, or leave one PC sitting idle waiting for the other to finish.

Running every PC in the house in one big server farm, I was surprised to discover that the MAC computers (a Mac Mini and a MacBookPro) are rendering more lines than the PC ones, accounting for all other factors.

For a 1080p frame, each of those 1080 lines is distributed between all clients on the server, and then the server stitches them all together to make one frame.

    Dell 4790 = 204 lines
    Mac Mini = 241 lines
    MacBookPro = 82 lines
i7 5960X 8-core = the remaining 553 lines, plus running the server and stitching all the lines together to make one frame at a time.

I used to use just the 8-core (16 virtual threads with hyper-threading!), but that only gets halfway there. I started using the Dell and 8-core 5960X together, but my Mac Mini actually grinds through the lines a little faster than the Dell PC. It's not supposed to--according to the chip ratings and scores, the Dell should be faster than the Mac.

The level up would be to use pure server chips, meant for this kind of workstation processing, but that's probably out of my league and interests. A 1920 X 1080 video running about 10000 frames (6 minutes at 30 frames per second or so) takes about 2 solid weeks of processing, and that's faster than I can crank out good music to match them. But it actually forces me to be productive!

PainStickingly, my last Stick tune and fractal video, literally came about as a requirement for a 5 and a half minute song to match the 5:30 video that I had made. That's awesome at getting me to be productive. Good times.

My current Stick Tune ("Chromatic Jack") I'm working on was a requirement for a 6:06 video. I'm done with keyboards and some awesome percussion--my very best yet--and I need to step up and be BASS GOD to finish it. I can sing some wicked walking bass lines thanks to the walking bass line posting and some recent research and practice, and hopefully I can get the digits to do what I'm singing.

The visuals are pretty bizarre, it's neat stuff.

Rodrigo, that was exactly what I had in mind for fractal music and Bach! As Scott says, cool visuals also.

Thanks, guys! And I'd love to see what y'all have cooking as well. Musicians seem to usually be into several different creative fields at once--creativity knows no bounds!

I keep forgetting that cheap server stuff gets dumped on the Intertoobs and Ebay all the time.

For $195 plus 30 bucks shipping, I just added 24 cores to the fractal render farm. I saw this on Ebay (HP Proliant DL165 G7 server- 2 x 12 core AMD Opteron 6172, 32GB RAM, 160GB HD) and bought one, and maybe another one next month if it works out. Supposed to be quiet and pulls a Cinibench score over +1300, which rivals the +$1000-chip alone in the X5960 8-core that's been my main workhorse so far. I can stack these servers, and put them in a corner, and they're supposed to be quiet and power efficient. It comes with everything but an OS, and I'm strongly thinking of going Linux--maybe Ubuntu or whatever. I've got music to make, so I'm not messing too much with (re-)learning Linux if I can help it.

I know many of you mess with this server stuff for a living--I'm sure there might be better deals or chips. I thought the bang for the buck was outstanding for two 12-cores at 2-ish Ghz for under $200.

Here is a relevant picture with fractal properties..?/..umm ,well it analyzes pictures and then shows its true(acid tripping) reality via some advanced- algorhythm- hyperspace- concept.
Guess who this is! I can give clues if needed. :o I have some revelations on this as well.. Cheers
