My uncle, Andy, who I haven't seen in 30 years or so, finally joined Facebook and he noticed that I was a musician (that's how long it's been!) and mentioned that my cousin, Doug, is also a musician now and I should check him out. (We're roughly the same age.)

Then I checked out his Facebook feed.

Imagine my surprise and shock when I saw that he's a Chapman Stick player! Whose Facebook posting came to my feed as:

"Doug Fankhauser performs acoustic music on Chapman Stick & Guitar every Friday & Saturday at the Salt Water Creek Café in Murrells Inlet, SC (6-9pm)."

His webpage:

Quote:
What can you expect to hear at a performance?

Skillful arrangements of cover-tunes and clever originals; Jazz, folk, Classical,
bluegrass, Rock . . . almost anything that one musician can possibly do with an
acoustic guitar and a Chapman Stick (and maybe a little more!). Expect real
entertainment!

And 4 of his Stick songs, 3 covers and an original.

This one is my favorite of his that I've seen so far.

I don't even know if Doug is already a forum member or if he's even aware of it. I'll have to ask him. But what a crazy world that both Doug and I are musicians and he's been playing Stick about 5 years ago and I forgot that he even existed. And lo--my cousin plays Stick. What an incredibly small world!

Check him out Friday and Saturday nights at the Salt Water Creek Café in Murrells Inlet, SC (6-9pm), if you're in the area.

Cheers!

Hi Steve,

Doug is a super nice guy. I gave a house concert at his place a few years back...

This photo was taken in his living room:

That picture looks like your Stick has only one giant bass string :D

Cool connection indeed, Steve! What are the chances, eh?

Yes, he added me as a Facebook friend and then asked me if Patsy is my mom, which is his aunt. Then we chuckled at the fact that we haven't seen their side of the family in thirty years and that we both play Stick. That and a few family things is as far as we've gotten so far.

I found his webpage and that listed his YouTube vids and I took a look and thought he's come quite far--although I don't know how long he's been playing.

How awesome! I was hoping someone in the vicinity of South Carolina knew who he was, and I thought you were close-ish in Virginia and then...even smaller world, Greg does know him. Way better than I do and he's my first cousin. It's good to hear that he's a good guy, although I don't know how exactly he ended up with Fankhouser instead of Frye (Mom's maiden name) or Sink (Dad's).

Thought I'd share this cosmic Stick coincidence. Cheers!

Cool connection Steve. I have one, although not a relative. A musician, who I now play with regularly, introduced himself to me after finding out I play Stick. He said a musician he grew up with played the Stick, and when he told me his name, I said yeah, I played with him in a band in the late 70's, he played keys, I played bass. With relatively few Stickists out there, it's still a small world.
